Samuel Avery
Managua, Nicaragua — Nicaragua Christian Academy
- Serves as a translator for medical groups; volunteers with Nicaragua hospitals as well as Operation Smile – an international nonprofit organization that repairs childhood facial deformities
- Captains soccer and baseball teams
- Actively involved in church ministry and has traveled to El Salvador on missionary trips
- Involved with HACIA: The Harvard Association Cultivating Inter-American Democracy – a government simulation aimed at high school students interested in democratic advancement and international development
- Serves as Student Council President and Class Representative
Enes Ayaz
Istanbul, Turkey — The Koc School
- Co-developed recycling program that turned juice boxes into chipboard, then converted the chipboard into school desks that were donated to an underprivileged school — a project that won first prize worldwide in the Volvo Adventure Environmental Challenge
- Tutors low-income students in math and science
- Co-founded Ataturk's Doctrines Club to increase awareness of current issues including global warming, poverty and human rights
- Student Council President for four years
- Member of the basketball team and European Exchange Program at school
Amanda Becker
Vero Beach, FL — Saint Edward's School
- Initiated outreach efforts to help victims of AIDS in South Africa; developed program to sell jewelry made by women suffering from AIDS to provide them with income
- Spearheaded Coats for Cape Town, a community drive to collect coats for impoverished children and adults
- Leadership Intern, Fellowship of Christians in Universities and Schools (F.O.C.U.S.)
- Participates in numerous AIDS fundraisers, and is planning an AIDS fashion show fundraiser for 2008
Patrick Blute
East Harwich, MA — Harwich High School
- Traveled to Australia to assist the Royal Flying Doctors Service — a not-for-profit organization that provides air ambulance service, emergency assistance and primary health care to those living in remote parts of the Australian Outback
- While in Australia, participated in Clean-up Australia Day, cleaning up a park near an Outback lake
- First-place winner in regional speech competition, focusing on "The Top Ten Reasons Why Community Service is Important"
- Producer and host for Harwich High School's channel 18 television show
- Captain of the varsity cross country team
Lauren Boldon
Minnetonka, MN — International School of Minnesota
- Created the family mentoring program "All for Mentoring," and developed companion website (www.allformentoring.org)
- Traveled to the United Kingdom at the invitation of the Secretary of Programmes for Salvation Army International to discuss global implementation of her family-to-family mentoring program, a main component of "All for Mentoring"
- Deputy Head of Outreach, responsible for organizing community service projects at the International School of Minnesota
- Appointed Junior Staff Counselor for Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership
- Proudly represented the United States as Student Ambassador Abroad, nominated by U.S. Representative James M. Ramstad (R-Minn.)
- Received the 2006 CosmoGirl Born to Lead Award (selected out of 11,000+ nominations)
Mariana Cobo
Cali, Colombia — Colegio Bolivar
- Organized CONVIVIO, a congress for Catholic high school students
- Visits hospitals biweekly to spend time with children who have cancer
- Works with local police in "high risk" areas, reaching out to children who are vulnerable to drug addiction, prostitution, violence and illiteracy
- Organizer of all community service efforts for Christian Life Movement
- Entrepreneur baking cakes to sell to local restaurants; profits from the business go to her social service work
Jordana Confino
Westfield, NJ — Westfield High School
- Co-founder and Junior Board chair of Girls Learn International, a nonprofit service-learning organization involving middle and high school students in the efforts for universal girls' education and human rights.
- Youth spokesperson in the anti-sex trafficking effort
- Delegate at 51st session of U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, participating in a number of key events including The Girls Speak Out Event in the ECOSOC conference on Human Trafficking
- 2006 World of Children Honoree
- Editor of Folio Literary Magazine
Paige Davis
Lake Charles, LA — Sulphur High School
- Started an organization that sells snow cones to raise money for individuals and families in need and assist nonprofit organizations
- Volunteers for the Special Olympics Equestrian Team
- Math tutor
- Participated in mission trip to Clarkston, Ga., to work with children of political refugees from all over the world
- Collected donations for battered women's shelter
- Participated in medical applications of Science for Health Program at University of Louisiana at Lafayette
- 2006 Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership and World Leadership Congress Alumna
Douglas Gee
San Francisco,CA — Mission High School
- Co-founded Vaccinate Mission, a group raising awareness about the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and the new HPV vaccine that prevents cervical cancer
- Tutored international students from Asia and Europe, designing and implementing a curriculum, at Intrax International 2006
- Vice President of School Site Council, a state regulated committee for parents, students and school staff that allocates the school budget
- Member of the Selection Citizens Advisory Committee, a committee of parents, teachers, students and school board members that establishes criteria to search for a new school superintendent
- Recipient, President's Education Award for outstanding academic achievement and community service
Milena Grgas
San Pedro, CA — Rolling Hills Prep School
- Lead "Dance!Dance!Dance!" — a dance workshop for underprivileged children at the YWCA of San Pedro
- Global volunteer at Tutova Hospital in Romania, working with the failure-to-thrive clinic for orphans
- Used role as Miss Los Angeles American Coed Junior Teen 2006, to promote a positive image of the youth of America through community service
- Chief Illustrator and Editor of school's prize-winning literary magazine
- Volunteered in New Orleans, cleaning up the city, gutting abandoned homes and painting new homes for devastated victims
Lorna Hadlock
Sarasota, FL — Pine View School
- Voting member of the Grants Committee, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, allocating funds for local nonprofits
- Volunteer in Teen Court, a community based alternative to a traditional juvenile court system
- Vice President of "Why Me," a school club that addresses humanitarian needs in the Dominican Republic
- Member of "People to People International" (PTPI) — a humanitarian not-for-profit organization that seeks to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities
- Formed PTPI Turning Tides Student Chapter in Sarasota
- Planning humanitarian trip to Guatemala over spring break where students will take school and medical supplies to the community
Perla Jimenez
Monterrey, Mexico — ITESM Prepa Tec Campus Santa Catarina
- First-place winner and first woman President of the Free Enterprise Leadership Conference (FELC), a congress promoting entrepreneurship
- First-place winner in the Globalized Economic Congress, nationally hosted in Monterrey
- Mexican representative to APEC Summit 2006 in Hanoi, Vietnam
- Collected money for UNIDOS — a foundation that benefits children with cancer
- Participated in Community Service called Papilla Maiz, collecting special food for children that suffer from hunger
Sharon Kim
Fort Lee, NJ — Bergen County Academics
- Founder and President of LiNK@BCA (Liberty in North Korea), a group in school that focuses in resolving abject conditions in North Korea
- First-place winner for 2006-2007 UNA-USA National Essay Contest on Maternal Health
- Outstanding speaker at Princeton Model United Nations in 2006
- Co-wrote health article published in Cornell University’s journal, Health International, forged partnerships with Cornell and Northwestern University
- Participated in "American Music Abroad 2006", a program enabling qualified musicians to travel and perform in Europe
- Currently conducting a yearlong bio research project that focuses on using herbal medicine to down-regulate Alzheimer's Disease
Kendra Kline
Queensbury, NY — Acedemy of the Holy Names
- Traveled to Guatemala with the Glens Falls Medical Mission Foundation, serving as translator for the doctors and assisting in the eye clinic they set up in a Guatemalan village
- Traveled to Nicaragua with the North Country Mission of Hope to build homes and roadways, distribute food and assist with medical attention and treatment
- Ran a fundraiser for "Children feeding Children," which endeavors to provide children with balanced, nutritious meals and vitamins
- Recipient of the Presidential Service Award in 2006
- Active participant in: Junior Ladies of Charity; Knitting for Needs; Feed the Children; and National Honor Society
Kathryn Leonnig
Dallas, TX — Ursuline Academy of Dallas
- Ambassador, Ursuline Academy of Dallas
- Serves on both the local board and national committees for CISV (Children's International Summer Villages)
- Earned Girl Scout Gold Award by creating a pre-school bilingual Bible study curriculum for a low-income apartment complex mission
- Traveled to Honduras for a school-sponsored mission trip to build solidarity with the church and community through meetings and repairing church facilities
- Traveled to El Salvador on a Putney Global Awareness in Action (GAIA) trip last to increase awareness about issues facing El Salvador, including illegal immigration, social injustice and free versus fair trade
Amanda Martin
Calabasas, CA — Viewpoint School
- Runs her own jewelry nonprofit that donates all proceeds to charity; has raised more than $10,000
- Used some jewelry proceeds to create and operate a campaign against tobacco (C.A.T. Week) to educate peers
- Motivational speaker, speaks to peers about substance abuse
- Member of U.S. Swim Association
Aseel Najib
Clifton, NJ — Al Ghazaly
- Co-president, advocate and peer coach for mock trial
- Press Secretary for Model U.N.
- One of 20 participants in both "Project Provide a Home" and "Project United for Children" to benefit homeless children and families
- Speaker on bringing together people of different faiths
- Volunteered more than 300 hours at a local pediatrician's office
Claudia Nieuwoudt
Wichita, KS — The Independent School
- Emergency Room volunteer in triage
- English teacher to Hispanic parents
- Planned and hosted a baby shower fundraiser which raised hundreds of dollars to provide diapers and supplies for the Gerard House — a home for pregnant teens
- Volunteer for Lutheran Disaster Response, traveled to La. in spring 2006 to clean up after Hurricane Katrina
- Speaks four languages: English, German, Afrikaans and Spanish
Carla O'Connor
Wollaston, MA — North Quincy High School
- Recipient of the Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award for organizing a wellness group for high school students
- Silver Award for creating a reading room for local school
- Media Manager for Girl Scouts service team
- President of high school film society
- Member of environmental club that helps to save endangered turtles
- Coaches boys and girls for the local youth soccer organization
Melissa Oppenheim
Southwest Ranches, FL — Pine Crest School
- Founded OppGuide, a publication that lists community service opportunities for teens; sale proceeds are donated to charity
- Political cartoonist; commissioned by state of Florida to create a series of cartoons for Governor Jeb Bush and donated some of her commission to charity
- Syndicated cartoonist in two local publications and Cartoon Editor of high school paper
- Received statewide recognition for science research concerning buckling points of carbon nanotubes at the Florida Junior Academy of Sciences Symposium — follow-up research is underway at the University of Florida
- Raised a total of $20,000 creating and selling jewelry and baked goods for the families of 9/11 victims and survivors
- Varsity coxswain for Pine Crest Crew team
Brenton Partridge
Califon, NJ — Voorhees High School
- Recipient of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Outstanding Leader of Character, awarded by the West Point Society of New Jersey
- Initiated ongoing scientific research project on noise-induced hearing loss among youth
- Organized Books for Africa, a textbook collection for needy children in Africa
- Started and leads weekly volunteer effort at Little Brook Nursing Home
- Selected as one of thirty high school students to attend the national ASM Eisenman Materials Camp, which exposes high school students to career possibilities in applied science and engineering
Warner Lee Phipps
Kearney, NE — Kearney Public High School
- Volunteer for the Salvation Army, has raised $20,000 worth of toys for the organization's Christmas Outreach program
- Farm Safety Ambassador, educates people about dangers associated with grain bins, conducts media interviews and public service announcements, and designed safety cards that have reached thousands
- Serves on the Buffalo County Youth Advisory Board where he allocates funding to address health related needs facing youth
- Serves as Vice-President of the Platte Valley FFA Chapter (a national student organization) and received the National Risk Management Award, State Leadership, Proficiency and Entrepreneurship Awards in agricultural work
- Active participant in the International Student Host Family Program the past eight years involving college / high school youth from Japan, Nepal and Kyrgyzstan
Erika Solanki
Castro Valley, CA — Castro Valley High School
- Active leader in the HEART Peer Education program at Girls Inc., currently serving as a Peer Mentor assisting peer educators as a counselor, facilitating workshops and presentations on health education
- Global Citizen Corps leader for NetAid, educating young people to fight global poverty by raising awareness, generating media and mobilizing peers in campaigns
- Co-President of Amnesty International, working towards raising $14,000 for a water pump for an African village
- Co-President of the South Asian Student Association, and organized a fundraiser for the Indian Ocean Tsunami, raising over $7,400 for the victims
- Statewide marketing director for the California Association of Student Councils, and constructed an educational website, SpeakUrMind.com to encourage collaboration among students throughout California to better their local education systems
Michael White
Atlanta, GA — Westminster
- Recognized as the Atlanta Young Entrepreneur of the Year
- Founder of three international internet communities that serve 90,000 registered members from 100 countries, featured in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and Macworld Magazine
- Youth Volunteer Chairperson, videographer, and technology consultant for the Alzheimer's Association fundraising events
- Entrepreneur guest speaker for Odyssey, promoting academic achievement for inner-city public school students
- Founder of the Entrepreneurial Speaker Series
Tornike Zurabashvili
Albuquerque, NM — Highland High School
- Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) student from the Republic of Georgia, won scholarship and came to America for a full school year
- Volunteer for several organizations including: Knights of Columbus; Right to Life; and All Faiths
- Selected as a participant in this year's Civic Education workshop in Washington, D.C., conducted by the CLOSE UP Foundation
- Member of New Mexico Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement, which promotes educational enrichment for middle and high school students from historically under-represented ethnic groups
- Published an article on improving tourism facilities in his region; was the youngest co-author of the book Decentralization of Georgia
