Major Selection
Students choose a major area of study in the second semester sophomore year. At that time, a faculty member from the appropriate department will be assigned as their academic adviser. Students should consult with a faculty adviser to choose courses and academic planning. The First-Year Seminar Instructor serves as the adviser during the first three semesters. (Part-time Evening Students declare the major upon matriculation into a degree program. See Evening Program Admissions.)
The degree programs at Bentley are structured to allow for major changes within the first two years of study. By your third semester, you should declare a major.
In deciding on the most appropriate major for you:
- browse the homepages of academic departments for more information on each major and courses required
- read the Bentley Major Guide
- attend a Major Selection Workshop offered by the Academic Advising Center
- discuss your options with your academic adviser
- explore your career options in the Office of Career Services
- speak with the chair of the department of the intended major to learn more about the major and to officially declare your major
To declare or change your major:
- obtain a Student Change Form at the Registrar’s Office or in the Office of Academic Services
- obtain the signature of the department chair of the intended major on the form, the department chair will also assign you a faculty adviser at that time (day students only)
- return the completed and signed Student Change Form to the Registrar’s Office (Rauch 111)
Once the major declaration or major change process is complete:
- the Registrar’s Office will create a Degree Audit Summary (DAS) for you in the new major
Minor Enrollment
After deciding on a major, students may consider choosing a minor to develop expertise in a second area of study. A minor comprises at least four courses from the same discipline. Business majors can minor in the arts and sciences, an interdisciplinary area, or a business topic in a different department. Arts and sciences majors can choose from an array of business minors and interdisciplinary topics.
Bachelor degree students are eligible to pursue a minor as part of their degree program. A minor consists of 12 distinct credits, approved by the Minors Coordinators, that form a cohesive series of study in the arts and sciences or business disciplines. Some majors have restrictions on which minors may be pursued.
Minors Policy:
- Courses taken to fulfill a minor are applied as business-related electives, arts and sciences electives, or unrestricted electives. As a result, proper academic planning is necessary. Some of the minor descriptions indicate whether classes are considered arts and science versus business electives. The electives guidelines also provide this information.
- Courses fulfilling either General Education or Business Core requirements may not be applied to a minor.
- Students may declare and complete up to 2 minors.
- Only one course, taken at another institution, may be transferred into a minor.
- Students may apply no more than 6 credits that were completed prior to declaring a minor.
- Students must achieve a minimum cumulative gpa of 2.0 in the minor.
To declare your minor:
- Complete a Minor Program Enrollment Form with the Minors coordinator of the intended minor
Once the minor declaration process is complete:
The Registrar’s Office will list the minor and any courses you are required to take for the minor on your Degree Audit Summary (DAS).
