Scholarly Work in Progress:
A Corrupt Culture?: Incumbent Scandals, House Elections and the Media, 2002-2008.
Using data from 2002-2008 and interviews with over 20 journalists who have covered recent scandals, this paper focuses on the media spectacle surrounding incumbent scandals and considers the ways in which the media coverage, the type of scandal, the member’s party affiliation, the congressional district’s composition, and the quality of challengers contribute to election outcomes.

Social Networks in Political Campaigns: Facebook and the 2006 Midterm Elections.
This study investigates the extent of Facebook profile use in 2006, and analyzes which Congressional candidates were more likely to use them, with what impact on their vote shares.

VODYS: An Agent-Based Model for Exploring Campaign Dynamics.
We present an agent-based model of campaign dynamics, VODYS, and conduct three simulations to demonstrate the utility of agentbased models for exploring the effects of contact and context on political behavior.

Research and teaching interests include political representation, campaigns & elections, political communication & the mass media, telecommunications and Internet policy, education policy, and sports law. Current research projects include (1) examination of how legislators and candidates communicate with the public over the Internet and (2) analysis of the implications of population diversity for campaigning, elections, and public policy making. He is the author of "Members of Congress and the Presentation of Self on the WWW," Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics and "Revisiting the Link between Electoral Competition and Policy Extremism in the United States Congress," American Politics Research. Professor Gulati also is a survey researcher, having designed studies to assess the effectiveness of academic programs and policies in higher education, election polls, and surveys for non-profits, interest groups and local governments. Has previously taught at Wellesley College, University of Virginia, and the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute.
