If making a gift to Bentley is new to you, you might have some questions about the Student Giving campaign or your contribution.
What is Student Giving?
The spring of 2013 marked the first student philanthropy campaign at Bentley. The Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) led the way and asked students to make their first gift to the Annual Fund, providing support essential to Bentley’s ability to maintain its excellence. Students have the opportunity to show their support throughout the year, culminating in Philanthropy Week in the spring semester.
Why is Student Giving to the Annual Fund important for Bentley now?
Like most colleges and universities, Bentley is a nonprofit institution committed to educating students. Bentley’s tuition covers about 90% of our operating expenses, and without a strong Annual Fund, services and programs that we rely on could be reduced or eliminated. Additionally, alumni participation in the Annual Fund is one of the key measures that various surveys such as US News & World Report consider when ranking colleges and universities. Bentley’s alumni giving rate is about half of the giving rate of peer institutions, so we are trying to help increase alumni giving by educating fellow students about the importance of giving back while we are still on campus. We’re also proud to partner with President Gloria Larson and the Board of Trustees in creating a culture of philanthropy here at Bentley, as growing the Annual Fund is among their top institutional priorities in the next few years.
Why are we being asked to make a gift? We pay tuition and student fees.
Tuition and student fees cover approximately 90 percent of Bentley’s operating budget. By making a modest gift to an area of your choice within the Annual Fund, you help ensure that when tuition and fees run out, your classroom experience doesn't suffer! The extra 10% not covered by tuition comes from other revenue, including the Annual Fund.
Why should I give?
- To keep the cost of a Bentley education in check. Did you know that without other sources of revenue (including the Annual Fund), tuition this year could have been over $60,000 per student?
- To support Bentley’s tradition of academic excellence in business education.
- To begin your class legacy and support future generations of Falcons.
How much should I give?
SALC students recommend contributions that start at $5. Students that stretch to contribute $25 or more can make a tribute gift in honor of their favorite faculty or staff member or a department.
Your gift is pooled together with other classmate gifts and contributions from alumni, parents, faculty and staff and friends. Gifts range from $5 to $100,000 each year. You’d be surprised how much of an impact these gifts have!
I can’t give a lot of money. I’m on a tight budget.
That same statement is true for most students, as well as many of our alumni and friends. That’s one of the reasons our giving campaign focuses on your participation, not how much money you are able to contribute. You can give any amount that is meaningful to you; there’s no set level. To give you an idea of what’s expected, most students are comfortable giving between $5 and $25. When you think about it, that’s what you might spend on a couple of your favorite lattes, a pizza with everything on it, or a few online movie rentals.
I'll feel more comfortable giving after I start making the big bucks.
This is an important decision for us all to make, and making a gift is not a requirement. However, this is your opportunity to make a statement that “I believe in and support Bentley!” Student giving programs take place at most universities across the country (the highest of these are at Penn State, with about 60% participation by seniors). Almost every major contributor to Bentley we hear about now started off giving $15 or $25. Why wait until we graduate to make a difference?

Where does my gift go?
Your gift to the Annual Fund supports the operating budget at Bentley, which means that your contribution funds the people and programs that make Bentley run smoothly each year.
Will I be asked to make a gift each year?
Yes. Just like the name suggests, the Annual Fund is a yearly fundraising effort to raise voluntary contributions from alumni, parents, faculty, staff and students. The contributions fund the current academic year’s operating budget.
Is there a benefit to giving?
Yes – being a student donor means that:
- You are publicly endorsing Bentley’s nonprofit mission of educating students and showing appreciation for your school.
- You are setting an example for fellow classmates and alumni.
- Your name will be listed among President Larson, members of the Cabinet and over 3,000 alumni in our annual Report of Donors.
- You will receive an invitation to a special year-end celebration event.
