How do I give?

What is Philanthropy Week?

Philanthropy Week is a three-day, campus-wide, student-led campaign in March that kicks off a month-long education campaign about student giving. This year, it takes place March 24-26, 2014. The purpose of the week is to build student support for the Annual Fund. The three days consist of:

  • Awareness Day, 3/24: Raise awareness of Bentley's nonprofit status and educate students about the importance of the Annual Fund
  • Appreciation Day, 3/25: Building and showing your love for Bentley!
  • Participation Day, 3/26: Students are asked to participate with a gift of any size to the Annual Fund.

What is Student Giving?

The spring of 2013 marked the first student philanthropy campaign at Bentley. The Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) led the way and asked students to make their first gift to the Annual Fund, providing support essential to Bentley’s ability to maintain its excellence. Students have the opportunity to show their support throughout the year, culminating in Philanthropy Week in the spring semester.

What is the Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund is among the most efficient and powerful tools Bentley students, alumni, parents and friends can employ to make a true impact on the Bentley experience. Gifts directed to the Annual Fund are put to immediate use, providing timely assistance to address Bentley's greatest needs across campus.

Why is student giving to the Annual Fund important for Bentley now?

Like most colleges and universities, Bentley is a nonprofit institution committed to educating students. Bentley’s tuition covers about 89% of our operating expenses. A strong Annual Fund helps cover the remaining 11%, which helps the services and programs we rely on continue to thrive.

Does this affect our rankings compared to our peer schools?

Participation in the Annual Fund is one of the key measures that various surveys such as US News & World Report consider when ranking colleges and universities. Bentley's alumni giving rate is about half the giving rate of peer institutions. We can help increase the alumni giving rate by educating fellow students about the importance of giving back while we are still on campus.

Why should I give?

  • Tuition and student fees cover approximately 89% of Bentley's operating budget. The extra 11% not covered by tuition comes from other revenue, including the Annual Fund, to maintain a lower cost for a Bentley education. Did you know that without these other sources of revenue, tuition this year could have been over $60,000 per student?
  • To support Bentley’s tradition of academic excellence in business education.
  • To keep Bentley's high-ranking status as a top business university.

How much should I give?

SALC students recommend contributions that start at $5. Students that stretch to contribute $25 or more can make a tribute gift in honor of their favorite faculty or staff member or a department.

With gifts ranging from $5 and above, you may be surprised how much of an impact your contribution can have when pooled together with gifts from classmates, alumni, parents, faculty and friends.

I can’t give a lot of money. I'm on a tight budget.

That same statement is true for most students, as well as many of our alumni and friends. That’s one of the reasons our giving campaign focuses on your participation, not how much money you are able to contribute. You can give any amount that is meaningful to you; there’s no set level. An easy way to go about it is to think about your daily expenses and try to substitute your second coffee of the day ($5) for a gift to Bentley. That $5 gift will have a far greater impact on you and your classmates.

Why should I give now?

Bentley needs your support now. Student giving programs take place at most universities across the country (the highest of these is at Penn State, with about 60% participation by seniors). Why wait until we graduate to make a difference when our gift today can have an impact on your education now?

Will I be asked to make a gift each year?

Yes. Just like the name suggests, the Annual Fund is a yearly fundraising effort to raise voluntary contributions from alumni, parents, faculty, staff and students. The contributions fund the current academic year's operating budget.
