Dear Class of 2006,
I was so saddened when I learned of David Halberstam's death earlier this week. You, the Class of 2006, were among the first people that I thought of because he was your commencement speaker. I consider myself most fortunate to have had the privilege of meeting him in person while he was on campus. The man was brilliant, had instantaneous recall, looked you right in the eye when he was speaking with you, and was a genuine and sincere person.
National Public Radio had several interviews with Mr. Halberstam's colleagues who are also Pulitzer Prize winners. At the end of one of these interviews, they were asked to give the audience their messages about David Halberstam. They said, "Have heart," "Remember him," and "Imitate him."
I shall always remember him and I am thankful that we will forever have his books — especially, "The Education of a Coach."
I trust that you are doing well, being successful at work and in life.
