MELLO, BENTLEY REPEAT AS NORTHEAST-10 CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS
March Captures NE-10 Freshman of the Year Honors
WORCESTER, Mass. Bentley College junior All-American Gary Mello (Woburn/Shawsheen Tech HS) became the first repeat individual champion in 15 years and the Falcons went on to capture their third straight team title at the Northeast-10 Conference men¿s cross country championships Saturday morning at Assumption College.
Bentley, which has four of the first seven finishers, had a score of 29 points to finish 15 in front of runner-up Merrimack. It was the Falcons¿ sixth championship of the nineties and their 12th in the meet¿s 19-year history.
Mello covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:48, seven seconds in front of freshman Tyler Bloom of Merrimack. Freshmen finished two-three with Falcon frosh Lou Raffetto (Wayside, N.J./Ocean Township HS) third with a time of 26:57.
Mello and Raffetto earned first team All-Conference honors, as did teammates Dan Yifru (Plymouth/Plymouth North HS) and Derek Watulak (Rutland, Vt./Rutland HS), a pair of sophomores. Yifru was sixth in 27:28 while Watulak was one spot and 12 seconds behind him.
In the women¿s race, Bentley¿s Allison March (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry HS) earned NE-10 Freshman of the Year honors after a strong showing. She was fourth overall with a 5,000-meter time of 20:23, 42 seconds off the winning time of Merrimack¿s Andrea Leonard.
The top ten also included Falcon sophomore Julie Doherty (So. Weymouth/Notre Dame Academy), who garnered second-team All-Conference kudos with a ninth place finish (20:55).
As a team, Bentley was fourth with 96 points. Finishing ahead were Merrimack (45), Stonehill (55) and Saint Anselm (76).
Next Sunday, Bentley will host the NCAA Division II East Regionals at Boston¿s Franklin Park.
