WATULAK LEADS BENTLEY MEN TO WIN AT TUFTS; FALCON WOMEN PLACE 4TH
GRAFTON, Mass. Led by a second-place finish by senior Derek Watulak (Rutland, Vt./ Rutland HS), the Bentley College men¿s cross country team captured the Tufts University Hayseed Classic here Saturday afternoon. The Falcons bested the six-team field by finishing with 36 points, four fewer than runner-up Bates College.
In the five-team women¿s race, Bentley, with a score of 91, finished fourth behind Connecticut College (21), Wheaton College (64) and host Tufts (65).
Watulak covered the 8,000-meter course in 27:38.6, crossing 13.6 seconds behind winner Peter Cahalane of Wheaton. Other Bentley runners in the top ten were junior Jim Kastrenos (Foxboro/Foxboro HS), and sophomores Mike Killam (Groton/Groton-Dunstable HS) and Ryan Spinney (Newburyport/ Newburyport HS). They were fifth, seventh and ninth, respectively.
Rounding out Bentley¿s top five was senior Bill Muse (Salem/St. John¿s Prep HS), who was 13th in 29:00.1.
The top finisher for the Bentley women was senior captain Julie Doherty (Weymouth/Notre Dame Academy), who crossed fifth with a 5,000-meter time of 20:43. Maura Danehy of Connecticut College finished first by more than 50 seconds, posting a time of 19:05.4.
The only other Falcon in the top 25 was senior Christine Kevan (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South HS), eighth in 21:08.3.
Next Saturday, Bentley competes in the Dartmouth Invitational.
