Bentley Drops Two on Final Day of Florida Trip, Falling to Post & Minnesota State-Moorhead

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Sophomore Diane Morrison (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge HS) turned in another strong pitching effort, but it wasn't quite enough as the Bentley softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to Post University Thursday morning.

In the Falcons' second game of the day, Minnesota State-Moorhead scored five runs in the third inning and went on to a 6-1 victory over Bentley, which finished its ten-game trip to Florida with a 2-8 record.

Morrison, who had posted shutouts in her previous two starts, saw her scoreless skein snapped at 19.1 innings when the Eagles scored an unearned run in the third inning. Freshman leftfielder Michelle Stotz (Naugatuck, Conn.) reached on a bunt single and scored the game's only run on a throwing error after the lead runner was thrown out at the plate.

Morrison has not given up an earned run in her last 26.1 innings and had a 0.37 ERA in her final four starts down south. Against Post, she scattered five hits and issued one walk, but was out-pitched by the Eagles' Christa Holtom (Waterloo, Ont.), who authored a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts.

Back-to-back triples by freshman catcher Melissa Saylor (Southlake, Texas) and sophomore Holly Kitchen (Winnepeg, Mani.) highlighted the five-run third by Minnesota State-Moorhead (8-5) and supported the five-hit pitching of freshman Amy Losselyong (Appleton, Wisc.). Saylor drove in two runs to make it 3-0, and scored the team's fourth run on Kitchen's three-bagger.

Bentley scored its only run in the sixth inning, with freshman shortstop Alex Hitchcock (Abington, Mass./ Abington HS) singling home classmate Dina Ferreiro (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury HS). Hitchcock had two of the team's five hits and finished the road trip with a .400 batting average (12-30).

Junior Jessica White (Loveland, Colo.) had a third of Moorhead's hits, finishing three-for-three with two RBI.

Bentley is scheduled to make its northern debut Mar. 25 against the University of New Haven.
