Learning Outcomes

One of the fundamental charges of the Bentley University Residential Center is to ensure that learning remains a pivotal part of the residential experience. Each residence hall on campus plays an important role in promoting students’ social, emotional, and intellectual development.  We strive to foster atmospheres within our residence halls that help students expand upon their academic experiences in the classroom.  The outcomes below represent the learning students should expect from their residential experience through a variety of engagement strategies identified by the department.  By living within the residence halls, students will be able to:

Critical Thinking and Conduct

The ability to make decisions that positively impact an individual and their surroundings is important in the development of Bentley students.  Understanding the consequences of actions and being able to articulate university expectations are important in this development. 

  • Recognize the consequences of their actions and the impact those actions have on others living within the community
  • Identify university policy and operate within those polices
  • Articulate the importance of university policy in creating successful residential communities
  • Think independently and make decisions for themselves
  • Define their own ethics and values and how the two impact their decision making
  • Express values, ideas and opinions while respecting contrary ones
  • Identify and describe departmental processes (housing selection, room change process, check in and check out process)

Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills

Students will establish a variety of relationships on campus. These relationships will be dependent on their ability to connect in appropriate and meaningful ways, and also dependent on their understanding of themselves. 

  • Communicate thoughts and feelings in a respectful manner
  • Recognize the role of collaboration and interdependence in community living
  • Construct roommate expectations and agreements that discuss boundaries, ways to manage conflicts, and strategies for communication
  • Identify their strengths and describe how those strengths will impact their short and long term goals and decisions
  • Identify behaviors that positively and negatively impact their personal wellbeing and apply that knowledge in practicing self-care
  • State resources and demonstrate skills for successful transition into the university, while at the university and beyond

Diverse Interactions and Social Justice

Diversity and social justice are core competencies in navigating the world around us. The ability to connect with individuals who are the same and different is crucial in the development of each of our students.  Having the ability to hear and articulate different perspectives and to practice inclusion in their lives assists each student to become successful in their Bentley and future careers and life. 

  • Identify how discrimination and privilege can negatively affect members of the residential community
  • Describe how non-inclusive language and behaviors can negatively impact the residential community, while at the same time practicing behaviors that make all feel included in the community
  • Engage in discussions and dialogue with individuals whose identity or an aspect of their identity is different from their own.
  • Recognize the importance of advocating for members of their community and challenge unjust behaviors of other individuals/ groups

Connection to the Curriculum and University Resources

Academics is at the forefront of the University experience and should be at the center of what is learned both within and outside the classroom.  Focusing on bringing academics and other university resources into the hall allows for the opportunity for practical application of those areas to a students living and learning experience.

  • Identify and utilize appropriate campus resources
  • Name programs and leadership opportunities across campus
  • Interact and engage with staff and faculty from across campus within their residence hall
  • Practice effective study habits within their residence hall
  • Apply learning in the classroom to experiences within the residence hall
  • Give examples of how  their residential experience has enhanced their academic experience

Residence Hall Staff 

Support is available to you from the Residential Center staff 24/7 during the academic year.  Your experience is important to us and we will do our best to make your first year a successful one at Bentley University. 

Resident Assistants (RAs) are student leaders who oversee and provide resources to your floor.  RAs assist students in creating safe, compassionate, and inclusive communities in the residence halls.  RAs serve as referrals to several campus resources and educate on appropriate behaviors associated with living on campus. RAs are available every evening starting at 7:30pm either by Duty Cell phone or within the hall offices (during posted office hour times).  Learn more about the RA position 

Residence Directors (RDs) are professional staff living within the halls who oversee the daily operations, leadership, community development, and conduct needs of your residence halls. They also act as a direct referral to resources you may need while living on campus.  Meet the Professional Staff

Community Building Strategies

The Residential Staff, both Professoinal Residence Directors and Resident Assistants, promote growth within the residential experience.  In an effort to develop individual students, residential floors, and residentail communities, the Residential Center has established the strategies listed below to successfully reach our Residential Center learning outcomes.
