Overview

Stories are at the heart of the human experience, for they enable us to fulfill a fundamental need to understand ourselves, communicate our ideas, and make sense of the world around us. Storytelling plays a major role in every medium of communication, including literature, film, video, television, and photography. It thus makes sense to bring these various media together in a place that values the narrative arts.

In housing different media under one roof, the English department at Bentley presents students with educational and professional opportunities that cannot be found anywhere else. Here students can engage in both academic study and creative production of a variety of media. The department offers the same wide range of courses found at major liberal arts colleges: classes in literature, cinema studies, communication theory, creative writing, and expository writing. What makes us unique is that we offer new media studies as well, supported by our state-of-the-art Media and Culture Labs and Studios.

All of our courses are designed to develop in students an increased capacity for understanding the role of history and culture in knowledge making, for analyzing and thinking critically about cultural texts, for communicating clearly and persuasively in various media, and for using language precisely and cogently. Our extraordinary breadth thus reflects Bentley’s comprehensive approach to preparing creative, competent, and responsible professionals.

Students may choose a Major in Media and Culture, which includes hands-on media production courses, or students may design a Major in Liberal Arts with a concentration in English.  Both of these majors are designed to prepare students for careers or graduate programs that value analytical skills, communicative ability, and a broad knowledge of media, arts, and culture.
