This paper outlines the 25 Guidelines developed by the National Institute on Aging and the National Library of Medicine for constructing accessible online materials for older adults. The guidelines were developed for web site developers to follow in order to: 1) increase the readability of online text for older adults, 2) present information in a manner that will facilitate comprehension and memory in the elderly, and 3) increase the ease of navigation of web sites for seniors. Each guideline will be illustrated from examples taken from four federally funded projects that have successfully employed the guidelines in the construction of web-based materials. The discussion will close with an overview of the value of usability testing with older adults and how the application of the guidelines can reduce errors observed in usability assessments.
