Emerging Issues

Prof. Chris Beneke

Christopher J. Beneke, assistant professor of History at Bentley University, teaches and writes about revolutionary and early American history with a focus on intellectual and religious history. Author of Beyond Toleration: The Religious Origins of American Pluralism, Professor Beneke’s current research focuses on the controversies over public education in 19th-century America.

The History of Ideas

Historian Chris Beneke tries to impress upon his Bentley students that ideas don’t just appear out of thin air. Rather, they evolve over many years of political controversy and social turmoil. Author of Beyond Toleration: The Religious Origins of American Pluralism, Professor Beneke is helping students understand contemporary culture in light of the past. By grappling with the history of ideas, his students learn to think critically about our world and to appreciate the revolutionary changes that created it.

In the video below, Professor Beneke discusses how the study of history in particular, and liberal arts in general, equip students with the critical thinking skills and broad perspectives needed for success in the world of business.
