Current Research
Markus is currently working on two major funded research projects:
Interorganizational Information Systems Integration Through Industry-wide IS Standardization: Technical Design Choices and Collective Action Dilemmas. This National Science Foundation-funded project, also called the VISTA (Vertical Industry Standards and Technology Adoption) project, is a collaborative effort with C. W. Steinfield (Michigan State University) and R. T. Wigand (University of Arkansas at Little Rock). A major objective of this project is to examine standards diffusion patterns at the industry or organizational community level of analysis. The study website can be found at http://ebusiness.tc.msu.edu/netindustry/index.html.
Design Principles for Effective Public Safety Response Infrastructures. This research project, funded by the National Science Foundation, involves collaboration between researchers at Bentley and Steven B. Sawyer (Syracuse University). A major theme of this research is the governance of inter-organizational business processes and information systems. The study URL is: http://www.publicsafetynetworksstudy.org/.
Markus is also working with colleagues at MIT’s Center for Information Systems Research (http://mitsloan.mit.edu/cisr/) on a study of organization design and governance processes in the information technology units of large enterprises. Other research interests include the organizational architecture of multinational enterprises, the role of the board of directors in information technology governance, and business process management.
