Since the present was forged in the past, the study of history
is uniquely suited to enable us to comprehend and deal with
the modern world. A major in history promotes critical
thinking, data analysis, and communication skills. It also
provides excellent preparation for careers in professional
fields such as business, law, journalism, government, and
education. In addition to a wide range of courses and the
opportunity to undertake directed studies, the Department of
History offers both a major and minor. Students participate
in broadly based and globally oriented study through a concentration
in one of two fields: regional history (American,
European, Asian or Latin American/Caribbean) or thematic
history (e.g., social, economic, or military history.) The major
consists of 8 courses beyond the General Education Core
disciplinary requirement. It also includes a required Business Studies
Minor. In consultation with an adviser, the student plans a program of
courses fulfilling the following requirements:
Required Courses
• A minimum of four courses in a field of regional concentration,
either American, European, Asian, or Latin
American/Caribbean, or in a thematic area in history
such as economic history, social history, or war and society
(at least two of these courses must be at the 300 level)
• Two unrestricted History electives
• A minimum of one course in non-western history or, if the area is
non-western, one western history course.
• HI 402 Seminar in History.
If the student’s concentration is thematic, at least one course must be western
while another course must be non-western
The Business Studies Minor is:
GB110 Legal and Ethical Environment of Business
GB112 Tools and Concepts in Accounting and Finance
GB212 Practice and Applications in Accounting and Finance
GB213 Statistical Analysis of Business Data
And either GB214 Marketing-Operations Fundamentals or
GB215 Human Behavior and Organizations.
Students considering a major in History should consult with the
department chairperson.
Advantages for History Majors with Business Minors
A history major, combined with a business minor and history internship, provides a particularly attractive program of academic and practical experience. For many career options, it is the ideal professional preparation. History majors can also apply for admission to Bentley's five-year BA/MBA program.
The History Minor
A history minor allows students who are not history majors to pursue a special interest. A history minor can be a significant addition to any major program. The history minor consists of four courses beyond those you'll take in the General Education Core. At least three of these courses must be organized around a regional or thematic concentration. Regional concentrations include United States, European, Latin American/Caribbean, or Asian history.
