How do you teach a course whose subject matter won’t sit still? If you’re Bentley CIS professor James Pepe, you make the curriculum as open to innovation as the technology being covered.

The resulting course — Android Application Development — delivers a hands-on, hard-core look at the popular smartphone operating system. Students learn how it works, then apply the lessons to create their own Android applications. Pepe has taught the course in the past three spring semesters.

New center seeks to help translate research into products

If there were a drug that could cure cancer or prevent Alzheimer’s disease, you would undoubtedly want it. But the important question is: how would such a drug be discovered and brought to market?

Tough issues like this are on the table at Bentley’s Center for Integration of Science and Industry. The center will specifically explore how to translate great science into public value to help make a difference in the world.

Hockey team skates for scholarship, citizenship, Bentley pride

Almost lost amid the organized chaos of a mid-winter hockey practice at Watertown’s John A. Ryan Skating Arena – a shoebox-sized facility fondly nicknamed “The JAR” by Bentley skaters – stands the Bentley Falcons’ coach, Ryan Soderquist ’00, not looking an ounce heavier than his playing weight of 160 pounds.

Like a coiled spring, the coach moves from one station to the next, making sure that players skate hard, with a sense of urgency. No time or motion is wasted. These kids care.

Street vendors hit campus to demonstrate latest trends in retailing

Truck retailing is a business model that has taken the country’s urban areas by storm — and the Bentley campus. On November 30, eight of Boston’s most popular and successful truck retailers came to the university to share their experiences, advice, and insights during a panel discussion with students in Marketing Lecturer Mike Tesler’s Marketing 344 Retailing course. Parked outside the Center for Marketing Technology were one clothing and three food trucks for his students to examine before the event.

It often ends simply, too — with a startling statistic. According to national research, American students with a learning disability will drop out of high school at twice the normal rate.

Bentley Reduces Carbon Footprint with Wind Energy

When it comes to sustainability, Bentley has raised the bar high.

By setting aggressive goals to reduce its carbon footprint 50 percent by 2015, 70 percent by 2020, and achieve carbon-neutrality by 2030, Bentley is keeping in step with the rest of academia, which collectively has reduced carbon emissions by 25 percent over the past five years. That’s more than any other industry in the United States.

Faculty take prize in 48-hour film project

Bentley University faculty members Jeff Stern and Liz LeDoux began this year’s summer break with a frantic and sleepless weekend as participants in a timed filmmaking competition known as the 48-Hour Film Project. Their film was selected as one of the “Best of Boston” and won an Audience Award for its group screening.

Graduation 2012 marked a milestone in the six-year-old Bentley doctoral program: eight PhD candidates received their hoods in either business or accountancy, the largest cohort so far. And remarkably for such a young program, all eight have secured faculty positions in higher-education institutes across the USA: North, South, East and West.

On April 27th, Bentley University’s Center for Women and Business hosted their inaugural forum, “Moving from Conversation to Action.” With close to 500 community organizations, businesses and students in attendance, the forum showcased corporate leaders who spoke openly and honestly about the challenges they face and the best practices they employ for advancing women to positions of leadership within their organizations. Betsy Myers, founding director of the Center and renowned speaker on women’s leadership, called the forum an official launch for the Center, which will “act as a valuable resource for best practices on how to promote and retain women” in the workforce.

Can college students use social media to capture the attention of comedian and late-night TV host Conan O’Brien? One Bentley class is determined to find out. A “Social Media and Business” class spent spring 2012 in an imaginative campaign to corral Conan. Alyssa Hammond, adjunct professor of information design and corporate communication, started the effort as a hands-on way to teach effective social media.

Princeton Review’s ranking highlights Bentley’s strong commitment to sustainability, which began in 2007 when President Gloria Cordes Larson signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment — a pledge to achieve carbon neutrality (or “climate neutral”) by 2030. The commitment also called for Bentley to build sustainability into the curriculum and culture of the university.

More than 40 Bentley students found out as they traveled to some of the city’s most prestigious companies for Bentley’s Success in the City program in January.
