Bentley Becomes Official, International Home of Graduation Pledge Alliance

May 12, 2007

Beginning in the 2007-2008 academic year, the Bentley Alliance for Ethics and Social Responsibility will become the new international headquarters of the Graduation Pledge Alliance. The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility is a voluntary oath taken by seniors at commencement, and states: "I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work."

Students at more than 100 colleges and universities have taken the pledge since the program's inception in 1987. Initially created at Humboldt State University in California, the pledge program's goal is to guide students in making informed decisions about their employment; to educatethem about values and citizenship in addition to knowledge and skills; and to foster a workplace and society that is concerned with more than just the "bottom line."

The Bentley chapter of the Graduation Pledge Alliance-- the Bentley Civic Leadership Program (BCLP) --is a student partnership run in close collaboration with the Bentley Alliance for Ethics and Social Responsibility, the Bentley Service-Learning Center, and the Office of Student Life.

"Serving as the home base for the Graduation Pledge Alliance provides us with a platform for greater outreach," says Tony Buono, professor of management and sociology, and executive director of the BAESR and faculty advisor to the BCLP. "We're able to extend the ideals of the pledge and our civic leadership program to an even wider audience.

"Our goal is to institutionalize and expand pledge activities at Bentley and at other schools worldwide, creating partnerships to motivate and educate pledge organizers and supporters to ensure that the pledge is lived out following graduation," says Buono. "We have the opportunity to increase the involvement of an entire campus -- academic departments, administrative offices, and student and alumni organizations."

Buono adds that Bentley is committed to helping its students become more aware of and committed to a sense of ethics, civic engagement, and ethical and socially responsible behavior. "We want to graduate self- and socially-aware students who are deeply cognizant of the critical role they can - and need to - play in the larger society."

The Bentley Alliance for Ethics and Social Responsibility (BAESR) was created in 2004 to amplify, enhance and extend the work of its five member organizations at Bentley: the Center for Business Ethics, the Women's Leadership Institute, the Global CyberLaw Center, the Bentley Service-Learning Center and the Cronin International Center. The aim of the Alliance is to encourage greater awareness of, respect for and commitment to ethics, service and social responsibility in research, curricula and campus culture. Key campus-wide initiatives include Bentley's diversity efforts, Risk Management Research Program, Institutional Review Board, the Academic Integrity Policy and the Class Book program.
