Bentley College Announces Summer Business Camps for High School Students

WALTHAM, Mass.- Bentley College announces three Camp Bentley summer business camps for high school students, including two new for 2000: Get Wired, Get Hired; Wall Street 101; and the Leadership Institute. The one-week residential summer programs, held on the Bentley College campus in Waltham, Mass., combine learning and fun, adding a captivating twist to business and technology.
While learning about such topics as women in business and the ins-and-outs of Wall Street, students also get a taste of college life by living on campus, as they dine in the cafeteria, use the athletic center, and join in social events such as barbecues, movie nights, and field trips into Boston. The details, dates and costs of the camps are outlined below. Costs cover room and board, class materials and related fees.
Get Wired, Get Hired July 23 to July 28 Cost: $275 Eligibility: Girls entering the 10th and 11th grade
Get Wired, Get Hired will make it fun for girls to learn about careers that integrate business and technology. Students will create their own web sites, use MP3 files to download music for a 'Top 10 Hits' CD, use the Internet to plan a trip, and do mock investing in the stock market in companies they can relate to, such as The Gap, Adidas, and Abercrombie and Fitch. Incorporating hands-on simulations and game playing, students will interact with professional businesswomen who will share their stories of educational options, career paths and work-family issues. A heavy emphasis is placed on the fields of finance, computer information systems, accounting information systems, and information age marketing. The application deadline is May 1.
Wall Street 101 July 30 to August 5 Cost: $500 Eligibility: High school students who complete their sophomore or junior year by June 2000
Wall Street 101 will use a hands-on approach- such as field trips to Boston's financial district and virtual company tours to evaluate businesses and translate results to the stock market- to teach students about trading stocks, bonds and currencies. They will get a taste of the excitement and challenges of a real financial trading environment using the college's Trading Room, where they will conduct simulated trading sessions. Students will also meet with teachers, counselors and financial experts. The application deadline is May 1.
Leadership Institute July 9 to July 14 Cost: $295 Eligibility: High school students who complete their sophomore or junior year by June 2000
Since 1980, Leadership Institute has given students an introduction to the world of private enterprise, as they learn about business operations and entrepreneurship. While the focus is on fun, participants will spend their day wrestling with challenging issues such as international competitiveness and management decision-making. For many, the highlight of the program is the mock company exercise, where students form a business and oversee management decisions- from designing an advertising campaign to balancing the books. The application deadline is July 4.
