Bentley College BCAL Students Mark Ten Years Helping Consumers Gain Refunds

October 8, 2002

WALTHAM, Mass.- Would you believe that residents south of Boston have gained consumer refunds in excess of $425,000 thanks to Bentley College students? The Bentley Consumer Action Line (BCAL)- where students are trained to mediate actual consumer complaints against area businesses- is one of the state's first consumer offices to be staffed by college students.

Bentley has been awarded its tenth consecutive grant for the continuation of the action line. In recognition of this anniversary and achievement, BCAL and the Bentley College Law Department will host a celebratory event on Monday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. in Koumantzelis Auditorium, Lindsay Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Barbara Anthony, regional director of the Northeast Region Federal Trade Commission, will be the event's featured guest speaker. She will discuss "How the FTC Guards Consumer Privacy."

BCAL is conducted under the auspices of the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, Consumer Protection Division. Dealing with businesses ranging from mechanics to jewelers, BCAL serves residents and businesses in Attleboro, Bridgewater, Brockton, East Bridgewater, Easton, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Norton, Raynham, Taunton and West Bridgewater. To date, students have a 74% success rate in resolving customer complaints.
