Bentley College Expert Available For Massachusetts State Tax Amnesty Program
October 10, 2002
WALTHAM, Mass.- Stephen M. Politi, adjunct assistant professor of Taxation at Bentley College, is available as an expert resource during the ongoing Massachusetts State Tax Amnesty Program, which runs through December 2, 2002.
The program, sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR), is a two-month opportunity for residents to resolve overdue tax obligations without incurring any penalty charges. Under this legislation, the Department of Revenue states: "The Commissioner will grant amnesty to any eligible taxpayer who properly completes and files a Request for Amnesty along with all required tax return(s) and payment of the tax and interest in full." This applies to returns for all taxable years beginning before January 1, 2001. After the amnesty period, the DOR will be utilizing improved technology to identify those taxpayers with delinquent tax obligations.
"The Department of Revenue is trying to make this as attractive as possible," explains Politi, who notes the last amnesty period was in 1984. "Taxpayers with the unpaid liabilities should take advantage of it."
Politi is also an attorney with Engel & Schultz, P.C. in Boston, concentrating in federal, state, and local taxation (civil and criminal). He is former chief counsel for both the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and Massachusetts Joint Legislative Committee on Taxation. Politi's tax articles have been cited by the Supreme Judicial Court, the Appellate Tax Board, and the Journal of Bank Taxation.
