Bentley College Extends VPN Access To Students, Faculty And Staff

January 3, 1999

BEDFORD, Mass. -- Shiva Corporation, a leading provider of MultiService- VPN and direct dial business access solutions, today announced that Bentley College, one of the largest business schools in New England, has implemented Shiva's LanRover VPN Gateway to deliver secure remote access to students, faculty and staff. Bentley College, which first implemented the LanRover VPN Gateway in September 1998, has already connected more than 600 students, faculty and staff to a vast array of e-mail, Web and library services in a solution that supports Bentley's remote population of local, long distance and international users. More than 750 new users are expected in early 1999.

"Corporations use technology to improve the way they do business, and in many ways, we are not any different," said Traci Logan, executive director of information technology and CIO at Bentley College. "Cutting-edge technology, like VPN, enables us to provide students- using their laptops- and faculty and staff- using their home computers- with remote access to secured services such as Lexis Universe and Infotrac Search Bank."

Choosing a VPN Provider Bentley Trusts

Thom Boerman, manager of Network Services at Bentley College, began evaluating VPN solutions in May 1998. Boerman instinctively turned to Shiva Corporation that had been providing Bentley with direct dial remote access since April 1996.

"There are dozens of companies out there that will give you a virtual private network, but we wanted to go with someone we knew and trusted," Boerman said. "Shiva has unrivaled expertise in the remote access market. From our previous experience, we knew we could rely on Shiva to deliver the fully functional, cost-effective solution we needed in a very short timeframe."

Boerman and his IS staff were able to implement Shiva's VPN solution and deploy it to Bentley's population within three months. By September 1998, students and staff were accessing Bentley's information infrastructure from home or while traveling.

"Bentley's decision to integrate Shiva's VPN solution into its information infrastructure reflects the robustness of Shiva's products and our ability to meet the varied needs of many markets regardless of size and industry," said Dayton Semerjian, vice president of worldwide marketing at Shiva. "Just as corporations adopt leading edge technology to achieve a competitive advantage, institutions like Bentley realize that deploying a VPN solution enables them to position themselves as leaders in the information age by providing their global community with connectivity to the information they need."
