Bentley College Students To Provide Free Tax Preparation Assistance
January 26, 1999
WALTHAM, Mass. -- In cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Bentley College students will provide free tax help to people who cannot afford paid professional assistance. From February 10 through April 3 (except for the week of March 8)- on Wednesdays (5:00 to 8:00 p.m.) and Saturdays (10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)- trained Bentley volunteers will assist taxpayers with forms 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ. Appointments are recommended; however, walk-ins are welcome and will be assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Now in its 27th year of service to taxpayers, VITA is a voluntary program sponsored by the IRS. In 1995, in excess of 51,000 VITA volunteers assisted nearly 1.6 million taxpayers at more than 8,600 sites. This is Bentley's first year of participation.
Each taxpayer is required to bring all relevant forms- such as this year's W-2, 1099 for interest and/or social security benefits, and a copy of last year's tax return- to the Bentley site (Morison Hall 101) on the scheduled date. Federal and state forms will be provided. Each taxpayer is solely responsible for the information on his/her tax return; Bentley volunteers will not be personally liable. No records or copies of tax returns will be kept by Bentley.
Non-profit organizations interested in scheduling a block of time (and transportation) for their constituents, or individual citizens who would like to schedule an appointment, should contact the Bentley College Service Learning Center as soon as possible at 781/891-2773.
