Bentley College Students Receive $1000 SCORE Scholarships
September 16, 1999
Two Bentley College students each received a $1000 scholarship award from the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). Micheal Brown of Lynn, MA and Andrew Spellman of Westwood, MA, each received the $1000 award at the SCORE Award Luncheon on June 28, 1999. Micheal and Andrew graduated with degrees in management last spring from Bentley with special interests and career objectives in entrepreneurship, an area for which the SCORE award is targeted. SCORE offers this award annually to selected colleges and universities in New England to stimulate interest in entrepreneurial studies, curriculum development, and business ownership.
Bentley College has been selected by SCORE for the past five years to participate in the nomination of candidates. The selection process starts with recommendations of students by Bentley's management faculty and concludes with the final selection of two award recipients by the SCORE Scholarship Committee. The selection process also involves a student essay, an interview and a financial needs assessment. This year, the two Bentley students were the only candidates chosen by SCORE to receive the award.
Micheal Brown has had a love for business since she worked in her grandmother's store as a child. "I still remember the thrill of serving customers and seeing them satisfied after their purchases," she said. "Ever since, my passion of owning and operating a business became crystal clear in my mind. At Bentley, my business classes have reinforced many of my beliefs about what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur."
Andrew Spellman has been busy earning his degree at Bentley while running a number of businesses. "While earning my college degree in business at Bentley, I have made time to attend Dunkin' Donut University, received a franchising license, started a car retailing business and opened a jewelry store in Brighton," he said. "When I graduate this summer, I intend to focus my energy and enthusiasm, and aggressively pursue my goal of building a business empire."
