Bentley Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic Receives $93,000 Grant from Internal Revenue Service
May 31, 2006
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has awarded a $93,000 grant to the Bentley College Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic. Bentley is the only college in Massachusetts and among only a handful of colleges and universities nationwide (other than law schools) to receive this type of grant.
Now in its seventh consecutive year, the clinic serves low-income taxpayers in Massachusetts who otherwise may not be able to afford professional tax assistance. The staff includes Bentley graduate students in taxation, financial planning and accounting. The clinic is directed by Mark Nixon, chair of accountancy, and Jack Lynch, director of the master of science programs in financial planning and taxation.
The clinic is part of the Bentley Service-Learning Center and assists clients on two fronts: educating low-income taxpayers who speak English as a second language on tax rights and responsibilities; and representing low-income taxpayers who have controversies with the IRS, including audits, appeals and collections disputes.
"The experience is successful on many levels," says Nixon. "We help restore the rights of clients by offering first-rate tax help with complex issues. At the same time, our students are getting a phenomenal experience negotiating with IRS agents."
Many of the outcomes are life changing for clients on a low-income budget. "We recently completed a two-and-a-half year case that resulted in a $26,000 refund for the family," Nixon explains. "It was one of many heartwarming experiences."
The grant, matched by Bentley and outside sources, is based on community need, and the quality and success of the program in previous years, according to Nixon. He credits the success of the Bentley Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic to the expertise of the graduate students.
"We can't make taxes go away," Nixon says, "but we can help guide clients through the process of getting relief from tax obligations and crushing burdens."
Open year round, the clinic handles more than 80 cases annually. All services are provided free of charge. For more information call 781-891-2083.
