Bentley Students Offer Free Income Tax Help to the Public

February 13, 2007

Bentley College students are once again offering free tax return preparation for residents of Waltham and surrounding communities. This is the eighth consecutive year Bentley has offered this service though the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Both undergraduate and graduate accounting students will offer their expertise, particularly to the elderly, non-English speaking residents, low and limited income taxpayers, and individuals with disabilities. The VITA program is held in Morison Hall, Room 101 on the Bentley campus on Forest Street. It is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sessions will not be held during Spring Break, March 10, March 13, March 15 and March 17.

Tax returns are done on a first come, first serve basis.

Residents should bring:

· This year's tax package and/or label

· A copy of last year's tax return

· All forms, W-2 and 1099 from last year (if available) and a W-4 form or recent pay stub

The VITA Program is offered through Bentley's Service-Learning Center, which promotes academic learning and development through service. BSLC believes that students' community involvement outside of the classroom contributes significantly to what they learn within it. This student community involvement assists community partners in serving the human needs and interests of their constituencies in Waltham and the greater Boston community.

Before being accepted into the VITA program, participating students are required to pass the IRS VITA certification exam.
