Bentley students raise nearly $60,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ®

March 16, 2004

WALTHAM, Mass.- Bentley undergraduates have raised nearly $60,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a result of the 2003-2004 Up 'til Dawn fund-raising program. They will present a check to the hospital on Friday, March 26 during the college's annual Midnight Madness festivities.

This past November, nearly 600 Bentley students - about 15% of the undergraduate student body - hosted a first-time letter-writing party with a goal of raising $50,000. Assembled in teams of six, the students sent out approximately 16,000 letters. Bentley was the third-largest student team in the country, and their fund-raising efforts place them fifth out of nearly 200 participating colleges in the country. Bentley is the first school ever to be ranked in the top ten after its inaugural campaign. Bentley was also honored last fall when St. Jude named it a "Star of the Week" for its outstanding fund-raising efforts.

The money raised through Up 'til Dawn will benefit St. Jude, one of the world's premier centers for research and treatment of catastrophic childhood diseases, primarily pediatric cancers. Since St. Jude opened in 1962, it has treated more than 20,000 children from across the United States and 60 foreign countries. Research findings at St. Jude are freely shared with doctors and scientists around the world. The hospital's daily operating costs are approximately $923,000, which are primarily covered by public contributions and programs such as Up 'til Dawn.

"The Bentley students are a model group of students for the program," said Kristine Thompson, event marketing representative for St. Jude. "The fact that they are the only school in the top ten that was in its first year of the program is an incredible feat. Everyone at St. Jude feels blessed to have Bentley as part of the St. Jude family."

In addition to the check presentation, Bentley students will enjoy a variety of fun activities during the Midnight Madness event. The students will also have the opportunity to meet a St. Jude family and St. Jude staff members.
