Bowles Performing Arts Series Presents: Tres Vidas (Three Stories)

September 3, 2002

WALTHAM, Mass. ¿ The Core Ensemble production of Tres Vidas (Three Stories) is the first event in the 2002-2003 Bentley College Bowles Performing Arts Series. Tres Vidas will be performed on Wednesday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Bentley's Koumantzelis Auditorium, Lindsay Hall.

This new chamber music theatre work is based on the lives of three legendary Latina women, portrayed by singing actress Georgina Corbo in both Spanish and English.

"Tres Vidas tells the stories of three extraordinary women who share Latin roots, come from diverse backgrounds, and made important contributions to the world. The narrative performed by Corbo is woven through the musical presentation of popular music, works by Latin composers, and folk music played by the Core Ensemble, a unique trio of piano, cello and percussion," said Core Ensemble founder and percussionist Michael Parola.

The three lives referred to in the title are Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), Argentine poet Alfonsina Storni (1892-1938), and one living woman, Rufina Amaya, sole survivor of the El Salvadoran El Mazote massacre (1981).

Tres Vidas

was conceived by the Core Ensemble and features a script by award-winning Chilean writer Marjorie Agosin, also a professor of Spanish literature at Wellesley College.

Featured music includes works from a variety of Latin cultures including the tangos of Astor Piazolla and songs of Carlos Gardel as well as new works by Latin American composers Orlando Garcia, Alberto Ginastera, Osvaldo Golijov, Alice Gomez, Tania Leon, Michael deMurga, Gabriela Ortiz, Pablo Ortiz, and Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez.

Georgina Corbo studied Acting and Latin American Studies at the State University of New York. She has performed on television in Law and Order, New York Undercover and the movie It's Always Something. She has performed on Broadway, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and in Russia's International Theatre Festival at St. Petersburg.

The Core Ensemble has garnered national recognition for its efforts to commission new chamber and multi-genre works. Concertizing and residency programming has taken the Core to every region of the U.S., the Caribbean, Russia and the Ukraine. The Core Ensemble was the 2000 recipient of the Edward McDermott Award for Excellence in the Arts awarded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Tres Vidas

was created with the support of the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council.
