Digital's Robert B. Palmer and LAU Technologies' Joanna Lau Address Bentley College Commencement Ceremonies

Waltham, Mass.-Presiding over Bentley College's 79th undergraduate and 23rd graduate commencement ceremonies, President Joseph G. Morone today honored the Class of 1998 and welcomed two prominent Boston area business leaders who delivered the keynote addresses, Robert B. Palmer, president of Digital Equipment Corporation, and Joanna Lau, chairman of the Board of LAU Technologies. Honorary degrees were also presented to Gary A. Jennison, vice chairman of Corcoran Jennison Companies; Frances K. Moseley, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston; and Jackie Jenkins-Scott, executive director of Dimock Community Health Center.
Degrees were presented to 876 undergraduates who come from 25 states and 53 countries. Graduate degrees and certificates were conferred upon 637 men and women representing 19 states and territories and 41 countries around the world.
The Adamian Award for Teaching Excellence was presented to Gerald R. Ferrera, professor of law. Bentley's Scholar of the Year Award was bestowed upon Mark M. Davis, professor of management. The Joseph M. Cronin Advising Award was presented to Andrew Aylesworth, assistant professor of marketing.
Student honors included the Robert J. Weafer Undergraduate Academic Excellence Award presented to Christopher M. Ellis of Greenfield, the Alumni Association Outstanding Full-Time Student Award to Linda Larkin of Waltham; and the Alumni Association Outstanding Part-Time Student Award to Gary Landry of Burlington.
Digital Equipment Corporation Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Robert B. Palmer addressed students and their guests at Bentley's 79th undergraduate commencement which began at 10:00 a.m. on the Baker Library Quadrangle. Palmer received an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree.
Palmer became president, CEO and a member of the Board of Directors of Digital in October 1992. He was elected chairman in May 1995. Palmer joined Digital in 1985 and became vice president, Semiconductor Operations the following year. In 1989 he was appointed vice president, Semiconductor and Interconnect Technology; he became vice president, Manufacturing and Logistics in 1990; and in early 1992, his responsibilities were further expanded as vice president, Manufacturing, Logistics and Component Engineering. Prior to Digital, Palmer served as executive vice president of Semiconductor Operations at United Technologies Corporation, which he joined in 1980 when it acquired Mostek Corporation, a company he co-founded in 1969. He shares a patent awarded for groundbreaking work at Mostek on the development and implementation of a TTL-compatible (transistor-transistor logic) MOS integrated circuit production process.
LAU Technologies Chairman of the Board and President Joanna Lau addressed the audience at the Bentley Graduate School of Business exercises which began at 3:00 p.m. on the Baker Library Quadrangle. She received an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree.
A founder and president of LAU Technologies in Littleton, Mass. Joanna Lau was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States in 1976. Before founding the company in 1990, she held positions in commercial, military science design and manufacturing operations at GE Aerospace, GE Consumer Electronics, GE Aircraft Engine and Digital Equipment Corporation. Her contributions to the Factory of the Future at GE Aircraft Engine earned her the Young Engineering Award in 1987. LAU Technologies, which employees more than 200 employees, is among a few small businesses meeting high quality specification standards of the U.S. military for defense conversion efforts. The company is also established in the ID Imaging and system integration markets.
Bentley awarded honorary degrees to three distinguished community leaders:
Gary A. Jennison, vice chairman, Corcoran Jennison Companies, a 1966 graduate of Bentley College, and chairman of the Bentley College Board of Trustees, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree at the undergraduate ceremony.
Jennison is a founding partner of Corcoran Jennison Companies, an integrated group of real estate companies that has successfully developed more than $1 billion worth of property on both coasts. Among the firm's properties are the Harbor Point housing development in Dorchester and The Villages at Marley Station in Glen Burnie, Md., Cape Cod's Ocean Edge Conference Center and Golf Resort, and the Bayside Conference and Exposition Center in Boston. Jennison joined the Board of Trustees in 1984 and has served on the Executive Committee and as chairman of the Development, Business and Finance committees. He recently completed a four-year term as chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Frances K. Moseley, president and chief executive officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the undergraduate ceremony. Since she joined the clubs at the helm in 1992, the number of youngsters participating in the organization's after-school programs has grown to 7,000. Moseley also helps to guide Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's Executive Committee of READ Boston, the Clean Cities Project, the Boston Police Department Comprehensive Policing Task Force and the FleetCenter Community Service Corporation. In addition, she is a director of PNC Bank, New England, and of the Tufts Associated Health Plan. She also serves as a trustee of numerous organizations, most notably the Wang Center for the Performing Arts, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Huntington Theater and the New England Aquarium.
Jackie Jenkins-Scott, executive director, Dimock Community Health Center, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by the Bentley Graduate School of Business. As a result of her strong and visionary leadership in community health care, Dimock Community Health Center in Roxbury, Mass., is considered a national model of integrated comprehensive health and human services. Under her management since 1983, Dimock has established programs and attracted new and innovative projects to its campus. In 1992, the center raised approximately $2.7 million, enabling Dimock to renovate the historic Goddard Building and to construct its first new building in more than 60 years. Another capital campaign in 1996 boosted the center's medical and HIV service facilities. Prior to joining Dimock, Jenkins-Scott served as director of the Roxbury Court Clinic and held several positions with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Department of Public Health.
