Graduate Courses In Taxation From Bentley College Now In Worcester And Boston's Financial District Through Distance Education

October 27, 1999

WALTHAM, MA-In Boston's Financial District and in the Worcester area, accounting, financial planning and tax practitioners no longer need to travel to Waltham for Bentley College graduate courses in Taxation.

Beginning in January and building on 25 years of national prominence, through distance education the Bentley College Graduate School of Business will offer top-rated courses in taxation in two locations: in downtown Boston at Vitale, Caturano and Co. near Lewis Wharf; and in Worcester at Allmerica Financial. At both locations, students participate live with the professor and students on the Bentley College campus.

For the first time, two options for distance learning are available. Through videoconferencing, two courses are delivered in Boston and Worcester, an opportunity that has proven popular with Worcester area students for the past year. Now Bentley introduces graduate tax courses online. Federal Taxation of Income will be available for students on the World Wide Web, without leaving the office or their homes.

Information Sessions, including a demonstration of how distance education works, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 6:00 p.m. at Vitale, Caturano and Co. near Boston's Financial District; and on Tuesday Nov. 16 at 6:00 p.m. at Allmerica in Worcester. Refreshments will be served.

Distance education classes enable Bentley's graduate taxation students to participate fully in the classroom experience. Miles and walls are eliminated as students and instructors in all locations interact just as they do in one classroom. This winter, three courses required to earn Bentley College's Graduate Certificate in Taxation will be offered. They are the first of five courses that will be available through distance education; all five can be applied to the 10-course Master of Science in Taxation (MST) program

In downtown Boston, Estate and Gift Taxation will be offered on 15 Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:50 p.m. at Vitale, Caturano and Co., 210 Commercial Street.

In Worcester, two 15-week courses will be offered this winter: Estate and Gift Taxation, on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:50 p.m.; and Sales, Exchanges and Other Disposition of Property, on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:50 p.m. This marks the third semester of Bentley's videoconference-based tax courses at Allmerica Financial, Hanover Building, 440 Lincoln St.

Over the Internet, Federal Taxation of Income will be taught at Bentley using a Web-based format with live, two-way voice interaction between faculty and students. Everyone will view the material under discussion at the same time as those in the traditional classroom setting.

"Nearly 2,500 tax professionals have completed the Graduate Tax Program at Bentley College," said MST Program Director Bill Wiggins. "Many now hold top level tax positions in companies throughout New England. Whether on campus in Waltham or through distance education, our students benefit from a seasoned and dedicated faculty who are actively involved in the academic and professional development of each student." Outside of class time, students can contact faculty via e-mail and telephone, and they have full access to extensive online research databases through Internet connections to Bentley.

Bentley also offers a Graduate Certificate in Taxation that consists of five courses which must be completed in five years. For further information, contact Bill Wiggins by phone at 781.891.2249, or by e-mail at wwiggins@bentley.edu.
