Gubernatorial Candidate Mitt Romney & John Hancock CEO David D'Alessandro To Speak At Bentley College Commencements

WALTHAM, Mass. - Bentley College is pleased to announce that Commencement for the Class of 2002 will take place on Saturday, May 18 at the college. The conferring of undergraduate degrees will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will feature Mitt Romney, former president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and Republican gubernatorial candidate, as guest speaker. Graduate degrees will be conferred at 3:00 p.m. with a keynote address by David F. D'Alessandro, chairman and chief executive officer of John Hancock Financial Services, Inc.
An honorary degree of Doctor of Law will be awarded to Mitt Romney. Honorary Doctors of Commercial Science will be awarded to David D'Alessandro and Bentley College alumni Joel B. Wilder ('58), chairman of the board of The Wilder Companies and Bentley trustee emeritus, and John T. Collins ('69), chairman and CEO of The Collins Group and chairman of the board of trustees at Bentley College.

David F. D'Alessandro is chairman and chief executive officer of John Hancock Financial Services, Inc. Named by the Sporting News as one of the "100 Most Powerful People in Sports" for the past six years, D'Alessandro is the architect behind John Hancock's successful and widely acclaimed sports marketing programs, including the company's worldwide sponsorship of the Olympic Games, Major League Baseball, and the Boston Marathon. He also serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Wang Center for the Performing Arts and is author of the national bestseller, Brand Warfare--10 Rules for Building the Killer Brand (McGraw Hill).
Mitt Romney is president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and a candidate for Governor of Massachusetts from the Republican Party.
Three years ago, with the 2002 Winter Olympics mired in controversy and facing serious financial crisis, Romney was asked to become president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. In his three years in Salt Lake, Romney erased a $379 million operating deficit, restored public confidence, organized 23,000 volunteers, oversaw an unprecedented security mobilization to ensure public safety and led one of the most successful Olympics in American history.
In 1994, Romney was the Massachusetts Republican nominee for the United States Senate and was a longtime board member of City Year.
