Junior Achievement Announces Nationwide "Who Wants to be a CEO" JA TITAN Competition
June 18, 2002
Colorado Springs, Colo.- Junior Achievement (JA) announced today that it will be conducting a nationwide competition for JA TITAN, a free one-of-a-kind interactive business simulation game designed to fit today's new economy. JA TITAN teaches young, aspiring entrepreneurs in an entertaining and engaging way about the nuances of running a global business in an increasingly competitive high technology marketplace.
The open competition begins on July 2 and runs through July 16. Students ages 14 to 19 are encouraged to participate. Estimates for participation in the open competition range from 10,000 to 20,000 students. JA TITAN provides young entrepreneurs the unique opportunity to manage and operate their own virtual businesses in a simulated online setting. Winning the competition will depend on the success or failure of each participant's virtual company. A company's success relies on how well the players manage key business issues such as setting prices, filling production needs, marketing, research and development, and capital investment. The top eight eligible competitors from the open competition will participate in a final round to be held on campus at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts on July 26.
Prizes will be awarded to the top eight players, including a "technology makeover" and an all expenses paid trip to Boston for the final round. The grand prize is a $10,000 per year scholarship to Bentley College. Bentley College, a primary sponsor of the competition, is nationally ranked number 13 in e-commerce by U.S. News & World Report. A link to the JA TITAN competition can also be found at www.bentley.edu.
"It is a pleasure to partner with Junior Achievement for this competition, host the finals and offer a scholarship to the winner, who will be among the nation's top teens interested in business careers," said Bentley College President Joseph G. Morone. "Bentley's focus on the integration of business education and information technology is a wonderful complement to the JA TITAN competition. These students will be showcasing their analytical, technical, communication and problem-solving skills as they compete in cases that mirror the realities of business operations in this constantly changing global economy."
Additional sponsors for the competition include Entrepreneur magazine, Ellacoya Networks, Liberty Mutual, AT&T Broadband and Terra Lycos. Terra Lycos, the largest global Internet network, teamed with Junior Achievement on JA TITAN when it launched the co-branded site in February 1999. By teaming with Terra Lycos, JA TITAN was made available to millions of teens with Internet access. The top-scoring finalist from the open competition will have the opportunity to shadow Stephen J. Killeen, president of Terra Lycos U.S., to experience a typical day in the life of a company president.
Designed to assist high school students ages 14 to 19 in developing the skills necessary to successfully compete in the business world of the 21st Century, JA TITAN is the first in a series of new online educational products from Junior Achievement. There are two versions of the JA TITAN program; JA TITAN School Edition is taught within the classroom and facilitated by a classroom volunteer that shares their own real-life business experience when teaching the class.
