Net Snippets enables Bentley College faculty and students a way to document online research

March 12, 2003

Bentley College has purchased a Net Snippets site license and has initiated their deployment of this innovative Internet research and information management platform that provides a unique way to save and manage Internet-based research. Net Snippets' simple, intuitive application replaces printing material, book-marking, and crude copy and paste. It provides a powerful platform for the ongoing management of materials from editing, annotating and indexing capabilities to automated generation of formatted bibliographies, as well as the sharing of research information, in support of collaborative projects.

Bentley College focuses on the integration of technology and business education. Recipient of the 2001 EDUCAUSE Award for Campus Networking and ranked by US News & World Report among the top 10 programs in e-commerce and management information systems, Bentley has required all undergraduate students to own laptops since 1985. Two years ago, Bentley opened $22M in state-of-the-art academic technology facilities to support teaching and learning on the undergraduate, graduate and executive levels.

"We are thrilled that Bentley College, in particular, a recognized business and technology education leader, has purchased Net Snippets. Because this application is a valuable tool students will rely on in their course study work, they will want to take it into their research and collaboration efforts in business later. We are convinced Net Snippets is invaluable in both education and business realms." says Yael Elish, the founder of Net Snippets.

Phillip Knutel, Director of Education and Research Services, oversees academic technology and the library at Bentley College. Dr. Knutel says, "Since many of our faculty are conducting research on current issues, and therefore must utilize online sources, Net Snippets provides them with a way to efficiently clip out the salient parts of online research into structured folders, then share those folders to collaborate with colleagues." He says the way in which the product takes online research and generates APA, Chicago, and MLA-style bibliographies as Microsoft Word documents is an excellent aid for students' efforts to footnote properly. "Students at every college and university at times risk plagiarizing simply because they do not take the time to document their Internet research properly. Net Snippets integrates seamlessly into the browser and facilitates accurate footnoting, making it easier to keep a record of these Internet research sources."

"As a teacher, you try to instill in your students the value of careful documentation of research paths and sources, and the need to consider and compare multiple sources," says Bentley's Charles R. Hadlock, Trustee Professor of Technology, Policy and Decision Making. "But the minute you send them to the web, they're likely to flit around from source to source, perhaps book-marking or printing pages. At the end of this process, it's just one big mass of information that is still hard to sort out. Net Snippets lets you pull out the key information from each source and set it up in manageable excerpts that are easy to catalog and sort through, and that are automatically referenced. It's surprising that nothing like this has appeared until now. My students jumped on the first weekend after I showed it to them."
