Parking and Driving in Winter Conditions
Last year’s snow removal was successful thanks to the cooperation of all on campus. Please take note of the following to help Bentley’s Facilities Management Department get the job done quickly and efficiently:
Parking Decks — Sand will be spread on deck surfaces to combat ice buildup. Freezing ice on the top (exposed) deck may linger longer throughout the storm. Use of salt is restricted on this surface. Students parking on the decks should use special care in this area during winter conditions. The grounds crew will make every effort to keep the area free of ice.
Post-storm snow removal at night — The grounds crew will implement nighttime post-storm snow removal in resident parking lots. After a medium to heavy snowstorm, the grounds department in collaboration with Residence Life, Campus Police and student residents will need all students to remove their vehicles temporarily in:
Lot 17 (Forest, Kresge, Rhodes)
Lot 11 and 12 (Miller lot and Miller deck)
Lots 16 and 18 (Trees and Slade)
Lot 21 (Orchard)
Lot 24 (Copley)
Lot 13 (Stratton)
During designated times, residence hall students will be asked to move their cars to upper lots for approximately 45 to 60 minutes so that the snow plow equipment can more efficiently remove snow. This method has served resident students well in years past, eliminating snow build up and utilizing parking lots more efficiently. Students will be asked to move their vehicles after the storm has ended, usually the next night, to allow plows to clear the lots as much as possible.
With everyone’s cooperation in moving vehicles out of lots, the larger front end loaders generally take one hour to clear their assigned lots.
Snow shovels will be available at Campus Police for anyone who parks on campus. Work-study students assigned to Facilities Management may be available (depending on class schedules) to assist with snow shoveling during the vehicle clear-out periods.
