Planning Guide Glossary

Blackboard: An online software platform for a professor to post course materials such as a syllabus, special readings and announcements.

Co-requisites: A course that must be taken either before or at the same time as another course.

Course Request Number (CRN): A five digit code attached to each course used when registering.

Course Waivers: When a student is not required to complete a required course due to previous academic work. In some programs no replacement is needed and in others a substitution is required.

Credit Hours: Bentley University follows Federal regulations and New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) guidelines in the definition of credit hours. At Bentley, one credit hour "reasonably approximates not less than: (1) One hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out of class student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester, or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time."

Credit Limits: The maximum number of credits a student may take based on their full-time or part-time status. Full-time students may take up to 12 credits and part-time students may take up to 9 credits per semester.

Global Business Experience (GBE): A faculty-led study abroad program that spans over 7 to 10 days.

GSAS: The Graduate Student and Academic Services Office, where you can find your academic adviser.

Intensive Courses: A course that meets for five weekdays or five consecutive Saturdays from 9am to 5pm. Most require a pre-session three weeks prior to the first class and many require a paper due four to six weeks after the final class.

MyBentley: An online portal for students to register for classes, access their schedule and grades, pay their bills, and receive announcements.

Pre-Program and Program Foundation Courses: Courses you must take prior to taking required and elective courses in your program. The MSA, MSF, MSMA and EMBA all have pre-program and program foundation courses. These courses include PPF501, PPF502, PF503, PF504, PF505, PF506, PF507 and PF508.

Pre-requisites: A course that must be completed prior to taking another course.

Program Guide: A list of the required and elective courses for each of our Master’s and Certificate programs.

Student Evaluations of Teaching (SETs): A required evaluation form assessing the course and the professor that must be completed by all students at the end of the semester for each of their courses.

Syllabus: An outline of what is required for each course including grading parameters, readings, assignments, and deadlines.

Waitlist: A list students who want a seat in a closed course. GSAS manages the waitlists and gives away seats via email if and when they become available.
