Small Necessities Leave Policy

This policy provides eligible employees with time off from work to attend to certain family obligations. It is designed to supplement the Family and Medical Leave Act policies.

Eligibility

Employees with at least one year of service and who work a minimum of 24 hours per week are eligible for up to 24 hours per year of time off for the following reasons:

  • Participation in school activities of a son or daughter, such as parent-teacher conferences
  • Accompanying a son or daughter to routine health or dental appointments
  • Accompanying an elderly relative (an individual at least 60 years old related to the employee by blood or marriage) to routine health or dental appointments
  • Accompanying an elderly relative to an appointment for professional services related to the individual's care, such as interviewing at a nursing home.

Plan Provisions

Non-exempt employees must use accrued vacation time or personal days to be paid for this time off. Exempt employees must use accrued vacation time or personal days in the event of full day absences. Employees will be granted the time off as unpaid time if both vacation and personal time banks are exhausted. Employee may use sick time when a family member is sick, up to four days per year (refer to the Family Illness Policy).

Plan Administration

As with all scheduled absences, employees are expected to give reasonable notice whenever possible. Documentation will only be required for questionable absences. Managers should monitor the maximum use of 24 hours per year.

This policy may be amended at any time.
