Commencement Participation Policy (Walker Policy)
If you are taking your final course(s) during the summer 2014 semester then your degree will be awarded October 24, 2014. You are invited to attend the May 2015 Commencement Ceremony; however, students who will be short of the graduation requirements by six or fewer credits at the end of the spring 2014 semester may participate as "walkers" in the May 2014 commencement ceremony. In order to participate, you must file the Petition to Graduate via Mybentley by March 10. Please be sure to select the "October 2014" graduation date as well as "I plan to participate in the May 2014 Commencement Ceremony." This will put you on the list of ceremony participants and commencement mailing lists.
In order to "walk" in the Graduate Commencement Ceremony, the October candidate must meet all of the following criteria:
No more than 6 credits away from completing your degree requirements as of May 1, 2014
Planning to take your final course(s) during the summer 2014 semester
Registered for your final (summer 2014) course(s) by May 1, 2014
May not be subject to review by the Academic Performance Committee
Have a degree GPA of 2.7 or above as well as a major/concentration GPA of 2.7 or above
Have no outstanding student account balance
Degrees are awarded three times a year (Oct/Nov, Feb/March and May). However, there is one ceremony per academic year, in May. All three graduating classes are invited to attend the May ceremony.
If you complete your final course(s) during the summer semester, your degree will be awarded in Oct/Nov.
If you complete your final course(s) during the fall semester, your degree will be awarded in Feb/March
If you complete your final course(s) during the spring semester, your degree will be awarded in May.
For example, a student who completes his/her final course in December 2013 will be conferred his/her degree on February 28, 2014. The diploma will list February 28, 2014 as the graduation date and it will be available for pickup/mailing no sooner than March 17, 2014. The transcript will say "Degree Awarded February 28, 2014". The student should list February 28, 2014 on his/her resume as the graduation date.
Please note: May intensive courses and May study tour courses are part of the summer semester, not spring. Any student completing his/her final course as a May intensive or study tour will be awarded his/her degree at the conclusion of the summer semester (October).
Please review the Graduate School Catalog
Your diploma will be available on the day of the May commencement ceremony. No diplomas will be released until the ceremony officially concludes.
