Bentley College

Introduction to the Institute

To mark Campus Compact’s publication of Students as Colleagues: Expanding the Circle of Service-Learning Leadership, the Bentley Service-Learning Center will host a two-day institute for faculty, administrators and students on November 2 and 3, 2006. The institute, which is co-sponsored by Massachusetts Campus Compact (MACC) and the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE), will take place on the Bentley campus in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The institute will take a team approach. Participating colleges and universities are urged to include students as well as faculty and service-learning coordinators on their teams. Teams will look at the various roles that students assume in helping faculty and coordinators design and facilitate community-based assignments, programs, and partnerships. Also invited to participate on teams are community partners and appropriate student life staff.

The goal is to share successful models for nurturing and utilizing student leaders in academic service-learning programming.

The institute will be organized around interactive thematic workshops focusing on three core themes. Supplementing each workshop will be a series of presentational sessions that will allow participating teams to highlight their approaches to nurturing and utilizing students as colleagues in academic service-learning programming.
