About Service-Learning
Students at Bentley appreciate the role community service plays both in their education and in meeting real societal needs. Through service-learning, students experience the connection between community service and academic, individual, and professional development. The Bentley service-learning experience encompasses two activities: a service project that meets community needs, and reflection and other assignments about the project to promote self-knowledge and insight into the experience.
At Bentley, student service projects generally involve technology, skills development, nonprofit organizational enhancement, or government-related activities. For example, students may tutor local residents in computer skills, work with public school children, develop marketing plans and accounting systems for nonprofit corporations, or act as consultants to state legislative and administrative officials to enhance the quality of life for Massachusetts residents. Students regularly interact with children, the elderly, the disabled, the economically disadvantaged, individuals whose native language is not English, and members of the business community.
BSLC students also participate in specialized programs to provide free tax assistance to low-income residents. These programs include the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), and the Bentley Low-Income Tax Clinic (BLITC), which provides assistance to individuals involved in tax controversies with the IRS.
