General Questions

Do I have to use WordPress or Expression Web to create my site?
If you want to create your student organization web site using an easy to use tool based on blog technology, you can use WordPress. You can create an html page using Expression Web or feel free to use another HTML editor. Expression Web and WordPress are supported by the Bentley Help Desk. 

Can I use scripting language on my site?
Scripting languages, such as ASP.NET, cannot be used. You can use PHP, but it is not supported by the Bentley Help Desk.

Can more than one person work on a particular site?
Yes. More than one person can work on a Student Organization web site as long as they have been approved through Student Activities. Please visit request forms for additional information. 

How can I get campus photos for my site?
You can borrow a digital camera from the media services department at 781.891.3462 and take your own photos.

How can I change the webmaster to a new person?
Please contact Student Activities to request a new webmaster. Please visit request forms for additional information.

Why won't my new site load?
One reason for new sites not loading is JavaScript from your previous site has an embedded file name pointing to the old server. You will need to update these files names to point to the new server.

What is my new site address?
Your new web site is http://student-organizations.bentley.edu/your site name.  You can also use the alias http://orgs.bentley.edu/your site name.

Do I have to use an FTP client to upload Expression Web information?
We recommend you use either FileZilla or Expression Web to FTP information onto the server.

WordPress

What is WordPress?
WordPress is a publishing software used to create a web log, also know as a blog. It is an open source state of the art publishing platform that can create attractive web sites quickly and easily.

How do I get WordPress on my computer?
WordPress is a web-based tool you can access whenever you are connected to the internet, so there is no need to download software.

How do I get support for WordPress?

How do I import my old student organization web site into WordPress?
WordPress, based on blog technology, does not allow import of HTML pages since the two technologies are different. Although you will need to create a new organization site, WordPress is very easy to use and will make maintaining the site quicker once created.

How do I get my WordPress username and password?
You must work with Student Activities to request a username and password. You will receive an e-mail message with your account information from the Bentley Help Desk. To learn more, visit the request forms page.

What if I forget my WordPress username and password?

How do I change my WordPress username and password?
You cannot change your WordPress username, but you can change your password. Go to the Dashboard of your WordPress site, click on users. Click on your username and go to the bottom of the page.  Enter your new password in the New Password field.

Can I use WordPress without an internet connection?
No. You need an internet connection in order to use WordPress.

Expression Web

What is Expression Web?
Expression Web is Microsoft's updated version of FrontPage. It is an html editor and web design program.

How do I get the Expression Web Software?
E-mail the Bentley Help Desk to request the software. You will receive an e-mail letting you know when you can obtain your copy of Expression Web. Go to the Library Circulation Desk and check out a copy of the Expression Web Software.  Install it on your computer and return the disk to the Library.

How do I get support for Expression Web?

Can I import my old student organization web site using the Import Web Site Wizard tool in Expression Web?
If your web site was located on a Bentley server, your web site has been imported into the new server.  You will need to log in to FileZilla and transfer your web site to your computer.  Then, you will be able to open your site in Expression Web.

Why are my links broken in my old student organization sites?
Some of your links may be broken if they were created a certain way. If you coded the old server into your link, you will need to change it to the new server name, which is student-organizations.bentley.edu. Check your links and make sure they are correct.

How do I move my content pages, such as PDF, Word, etc.?
If your content pages were located on a Bentley server, your web site has been imported into the new server.  You will need to log in to FileZilla and transfer your content pages to your computer.  Then, you will be able to access your content pages in Expression Web.

Can I save my local copy of my web site on someplace other than my C:Drive?
Yes. You may save your web site wherever you want. You will just need to have the Expression Web and FileZilla software. 

Can I create forms in Expression Web?
No. Forms utilize ASP.NET which is not supported by Bentley.

Are there naming restrictions for Expression Web pages?
Your main page needs to be called "index.html" and all your pages cannot have spaces. Use a dash instead of a space to separate words.
To rename your main page from "default.html" to "index.html", right-click on the file name and select "rename".  Change the name to "index" and save the file.  If you are asked to update files linked to this page, select "yes".

FileZilla

What is FileZilla?
FileZilla is an open source application used to transfer files from your computer to a server where they can be visible on the web.

How do I get FileZilla?
FileZilla is part of the Bentley Standard Image and should be on your Bentley computer. If it is not, you can download the software from on campus at http://deploy.bentley.edu. If you are off campus, you can download the software at http://filezilla-project.org.   

How do I log in to FileZilla?
1. Open the FileZilla application.
2. In the Address text box, type “student-organizations.bentley.edu”.
3. In the User text box, type in your username.
4. In the Password text box, type in your password.
5. Leave the Port field blank.
6. Click the Quickconnect button.
7. Your Remote Site will include all the pages, images, and files from your
    previous web site.
8. Your Local Site will refer to your computer’s C:Drive.

Do I need to use FileZilla with WordPress?
No.  You will not need to use FileZilla if you are using WordPress.

Can I FTP from Expression Web instead of FileZilla?
Yes, you can use Expression Web to FTP through the Remote Web Site tab. Then, you can publish pages from the Expression Web window instead of logging in to FileZilla.  For instructions, read How to FTP from Expression Web

What is my FileZilla username and password?
Your username and password will be sent to you by the Bentley Help Desk once you have been approved by Student Activities.
