Edgar Alarcón
Norwalk, CA — Santa Fe High School

  • Created Galleon Ethnic Artwork, a home-based business featuring multicultural art pieces he created
  • Chief Editor of Santa Fe High School's Chieftan Science newspaper
  • Volunteer at Los Angeles Zoo, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, and Heritage Park
  • Writing a book on religious and ethnic persecution entitled Migrations of the Western Stars
  • Established the nonprofit World Heritage Organization, which promotes intercultural unity and appreciation, environmental stewardship and socio-religious tolerance
  • Speaks English, Spanish, French and Nahuatl

Christian Birky
Glenn, MI — Saugatuck High School

  • Runs an environmentally friendly lawn service, helping to spread awareness about the impact of everyday choices on the environment
  • Founding member of the Board of Directors for the Saugatuck Dunes Coastal Alliance, a statewide coalition working to preserve Michigan's Saugatuck Dunes coastal region
  • Organized and led a fundraiser for Youth Action International, a relief organization for African children
  • Member of Teens Aiding Growth, an Allegan County community foundation that finances projects to benefit local youth
  • One of 10 students from around the world selected to help plan the 2004 UN International Children's Conference on the Environment

Scarsdale, NY — Scarsdale High School

  • Leads teen volunteers for Alternative Sports League in soccer, basketball, and field sports for youth with special needs
  • Special Needs Coach, Backyard Sports Program
  • Selected to speak before the Scarsdale School Board on ways to improve the school's academic and social environment
  • Member of Scarsdale High's Business Club and winner of club's semiannual online investment challenge
  • Captain/Starter, Scarsdale High School varsity soccer and JV lacrosse

Emily Cunningham
Weymouth, MA — Cardinal Spellman High School

  • Founded Spellman High's chapter of STAND, a student anti-genocide coalition
  • Organized an annual summer concert to raise funds for Darfur
  • Interns with Massachusetts Rep. James Murphy, and has drafted and filed legislation supporting a project called "Pay as You Throw" to encourage local communities to recycle
  • Started a recycling program for a food pantry
  • Member of the Human Rights Committee of South Shore Mental Health, where she initiated a program to better integrate clients in the community
  • Captain of the cross country team

Grace Do
Chandler, AZ — Corona del Sol High School

  • Founded KidTalk, a local library program that tutors primarily immigrant students
  • Won the Soroptimist International of the San Tans Violet Richardson award, which honors high school students who have made outstanding contributions to home, school, community, country and the world
  • Named one of six Arizona State Distinguished Finalists for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
  • Interns for the Arizona State University Biodesign Institute, and participated in the university's SCENE Research Program
  • Accomplished in Chinese dance, sings in the choir, and plays piano and violin
  • Participates in church mission trips to the Hopi Reservation in Arizona and to Mexico

McDonough, GA — Sola Fide Home School

  • Incorporated Dorminy Technology to develop, produce and market patent-pending secure communication tools
  • Fellow, Davidson Institute for Talent Development
  • Received the Alcatel Lucent prize for scientific depth and rigor
  • Awarded 1st place by the Association of Computing Machinery, and 2nd place Grand Awards at the 2007 International Science and Engineering Fair
  • Founded Soli Deo Gloria Math Club
  • Wrote a self-published book about the Reader's Digest Word Power Challenge to help other students learn vocabulary

Trenton Gaultney
Bonn, Germany — Bonn International School

  • Wrote a guide entitled Investing for Teenagers, for which he received the highest marks possible in every category
  • Participated in Project Compassion to raise funds for low-income families and street children of Romania; assisted in rebuilding homes
  • Implemented a program at his school called "121," which has each class sponsor one child's education in an impoverished nation
  • Student leader for People-to-People Student Leadership program at Stanford University

Washington, DC — The Holton-Arms School

  • Established A Book For Me, a nonprofit foundation that collects books for disadvantaged teens to combat illiteracy
  • Won 2nd place in national "LEAD" leadership award program by Guardian Life
  • Named "Super Teen" and appeared on cover of Next Step magazine, March 2008 issue
  • Featured on cover of The Washington Post Magazine, October 2005
  • Awarded gold and silver medals for field hockey; bronze medal for rowing in national championships

Avon, CT — Avon High School

  • Initiated production and distribution of gift bags for children at Connecticut Children's Medical Center
  • Secretary of Avon High School's National Honor Society
  • Organized a walkathon to benefit the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America
  • President of the Avon High School French Club
  • Named scholar–athlete each semester of high school

Finksburg, MD — Westminster High School

  • Member of the county Board of Education, representing a student body of more than 28,000
  • Serves on the Maryland Association of Student Councils, which functions as the voice of students across the state
  • Spearheaded the Stomp Out Hunger drive, using profits from donated athletic shoes to provide wells and agricultural support to families in Ghana
  • Volunteer tutor for Families Learning Together, a family learning program for adults with young children
  • Correspondent on teen topics and current events for local newspaper

  • Youth adviser of Our Voices Xposed and the Vermont Teen Leadership Safety Program
  • Planning committee member/staff of the 2006 and 2007 Governor's Youth Leadership Conference

Cranbury, NJ — Peddie School

  • Worked with Transparency International India, a nongovernmental organization to fight government corruption
  • Currently organizing a voter registration drive for students in several high schools in central New Jersey
  • Volunteered for Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity Orphanage in Tanzania
  • Taught math and English to orphans at Literacy India in Gurgaon, India
  • Plans to travel to Gambia to teach children and assist in the construction of a school

Still River, MA — The Bromfield School

  • Traveled to Zambia with an environmental education group to help area schools through construction of new buildings, teaching classes, and community activities
  • Started a school fundraising and awareness project called "Animals for Afghanistan," donating small stuffed animals for distribution to Afghani children receiving medical care
  • Member of Bromfield School's 2007 InvenTeam — funded by a grant from the Lemelson-MIT Foundation in 2007 — which worked to develop an assistive device for people with Alzheimer's disease
  • Elected class representative for Academic Integrity Appeals Board and class representative for the Student Council

Branchland, WV — Lincoln County High School

  • Focused Eagle Scout project on fire prevention education and obtained donated fire detectors — valued at $9,000 — for distribution to low-income families
  • Two-time recipient of Presidential Volunteer Service Award (gold level) for work with the Red Cross, food delivery to the elderly, adopt-a-highway, environmental clean-up, and Special Olympics
  • Recipient of two United States Congressional Awards for volunteer and leadership activities
  • Recipient of Presidential Environmental Youth Certificate for distinguished service to natural resource conservation

Sweileh, Jordan — Amman Baccalaureate Schooll

  • Raised funds for Habitat for Humanity
  • Travels to remote villages to paint murals in schools, renovate buildings and arrange activities for children
  • Spends weekends at a local orphanage as a Big Sister, and helped host 200 orphans at a school dinner
  • Designed and published a desk agenda to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis, and raised $3,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation in Amman
  • Invited to attend the Life Link International Conference in Sweden, joining students from all over the world to discuss ways to improve international understanding
  • Selected to represent Jordanian youth at United Nations Day event, where she spoke about the culture of shame and unemployment

  • Founder and president of S.T.R.I.D.E., a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing dementia among the elderly by spreading awareness
  • Research associate at Ohio State University's Department of Neuroscience, collecting data to study the microglia activity in the endocannabinoid system of mice with Alzheimer's disease
  • Volunteer in the Neurology/Rehabilitation Department at Columbus Children's Hospital
  • Captain of the Science Olympiad team
  • President of Model United Nations
  • Placed 1st in the Ohio Brain Bee, and 6th in the International Brain Bee

Miriam Ross-Hirsch
Warwick, NY — Warwick Valley High School

  • Chairperson, North American Federation of Temple Youth, assisting in leading and writing programs for teens on social justice issues
  • Created a two-hour interactive workshop called "The Power of Our Words — What We Say Matters"
  • Mentor in the Student Leadership Institute, which encourages middle school students to learn leadership skills
  • Primary officer in the school's Make-a-Wish Foundation chapter
  • Volunteer with Urban Mitzvah Corps at Rutgers University; works with the homeless, the poor and the elderly
  • Traveled to Washington, D.C., and lobbied senators, representatives and their aides on Capitol Hill, advocating bills to help the homeless

Westfield, NJ — Westfield High School, New Jersey

  • Founded a breast cancer awareness club to educate students about the disease and its risk factors, and to raise money for underserved and uninsured area women affected by breast cancer
  • Brought educational program Teens for the Cure® to her high school
  • Organized a breast cancer awareness dance, which drew more than 200 high school students and teachers
  • Raised in excess of $25,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in two years
  • Wrote a pamphlet on how to start a high school club, featuring a step-by-step fundraising guide, and strategies for integrating breast cancer education into the curriculum

Dunnellon, FL — Lecanto High School

  • President of American Teen Cancer Society high school chapter, and has raised more than $25,000 for cancer awareness
  • Conducted research for more than three years at the University of Florida; his study of radiation therapy has been chosen for publication in a national scientific journal
  • Developed the first dosimetric anthropomorphic phantom of its kind to test organ dose absorptions associated with CT scans
  • Second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do
  • Finalist in Florida's All-Star State Academic Team

Tara Suri
Scarsdale, NY — Edgemont Junior-Senior High School

  • Founded H.O.P.E. (Helping Orphans Pursue Education), which works to help children reach their full potential
  • Has raised more than $20,000 for orphanages in India and Sudan
  • Developed the website aandolan.org which connects youth to grassroots causes around the world ("aandolan" means "a social movement for change" in Hindi)
  • 2007 CosmoGirl! of the Year, selected over 20,000 other applicants
  • Wrote novel, in verse, about women caught in sexual slavery in India, which she hopes to have published

  • Founder of Dental HygIndia (www.dentalhygindia.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading awareness and improving dental health conditions in India
  • Co-President of high-school chapter of Building with Books (BwB), a nonprofit organization that builds schools in developing countries
  • Appointed to the BwB State Youth Advisory Council
  • Volunteers at the Pediatric Retinal Disease Research Center of Beaumont Hospital, helping to extract patient DNA and prepare enzymes for surgery
  • As Secretary of the Rochester Hills Government Youth Council, spearheaded a school supply drive for low-income children at a Pontiac elementary school
