Management Major
The mission of the Management Department is to contribute to the successful development of ethical and socially responsible managers and leaders. Success in the changing global business environment requires interpersonal competence, social responsibility, the effective use of information technology, and the ability to understand the inner workings of the entire organization. In addition, managers must learn continuously, think analytically, and manage themselves and others toward common goals.
The management student gains a generalist orientation coupled with an individually chosen focus. The department's educational approach emphasizes active learning to develop organizational, interpersonal, entrepreneurial and analytical skills. Using case studies, team projects, computer simulations, experiential exercises and internships, students apply course concepts to real issues and problems and develop a portfolio of skills that serve them well in their first jobs and throughout their careers. This portfolio of skills includes:
- Personal, interpersonal and organizational competence
- Self-awareness, particularly your strengths and weaknesses
- Self-confidence, belief in your ability to be successful
- Ability to acknowledge and accept differences and work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work effectively in groups/teams both as a leader and member
- Ability to use qualitative and quantitative data to diagnose, analyze, and solve organizational problems
- Ability to understand the strategic implications of information technology and to use information technology effectively at all levels of analysis and decision-making
- Ability to understand and evaluate the financial, quantitative, organizational, and ethical implications of management decisions and actions
- Ability to think in systematic, entrepreneurial, and strategic terms, and to invent better ways of accomplishing an organization's goals

Students are also required to take four management electives, including one with a global focus, and two management-related electives to complete their major in management.
