The English Language Learners (ELL) program strives to assist elementary-age students in learning the English language. By working closely with students who speak English as a second language, participants in the ELL program improve each student’s learning experience while serving as a positive role model for them.
Bentley students volunteer in classrooms ranging in age from kindergarten to third grade and work on a one-on-one basis or in small groups with children that have been identified as needing extra help. The majority of students we work with can all speak fluent English but, because it is their second language, have fallen behind their peers. ELL volunteers work with these specifically identified students in reading and writing to help increase their understanding of the English language.
This is an in-school program so a CORI is required. Spanish speakers are welcome but not required for the program. ELL pairs well with management, psychology, language, and some GLS courses.
ELL is currently involved at four elementary schools in Waltham, Mass.
