I believe that the best universities are magnets: irresistible communities that draw in students, alumni, faculty and staff. They attract people who are from diverse backgrounds, yet aligned in important ways. At Bentley, the common denominator that truly unites us is learning.

At the most foundational level, learning is its own reward. I’ve experienced this time and again: the excitement that comes from gathering motivated students and an inspiring teacher. And then applying that newfound knowledge to create positive change in your own life, the organizations you work for and the world around you. That is the highest calling and the ultimate satisfaction.

Last fall, I was vividly reminded of this when I co-taught a course with a talented Marketing major, Cora Soderquist ’26. In our Falcon Discovery Seminar, we discussed and debated with our students the intersection of capitalism and the global economy while grappling with the question of business’ role as a force for good in our world.

These were challenging and worthwhile conversations, especially within the context of the polarized times that we are living in. Too often these days, hostility pervades our public discourse, and certain groups are targeted for their identity, background or beliefs.

Yet it’s precisely this polarization that convinces me that now is the time that we must deepen our commitment to teaching and learning. Striving for a world in which different opinions are debated civilly and respectfully is the starting point that can put us on the trajectory to understanding and growth. This is the essence of true learning — to be open to listening, being challenged, changing our minds and growing.

Now more than ever, our world needs thoughtful, respectful and ethical leaders. When our graduates leave campus, they will be asked to navigate an increasingly complex and, yes, contentious world. It is our responsibility to ensure they are equipped to listen with respect, lead with impact and improve not just the bottom line but the world around them.
