Mohammed Yunis came up with a good idea: Give small loans to people who don’t have access to capital. A high percentage of the world’s population lives at a subsistence level. They spend all they make on food, and have none left for an “investment” that might make their microbusiness more profitable. If you could buy more bananas in the first place, your profit would be higher. If you could buy a cart, you could bring more bananas back to your village to sell than you’ve been able to carry yourself.

On September 11, 2012, Ambassador Chris Stevens was slain in an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Stevens spent his life, and gave his life, to bring good will from the United States to the people of the world. We may never know all of the circumstances of Stevens’ death, but we do know this: ongoing protests against the U.S. in other parts of the world mean that we have not yet succeeded in building strong bridges. We don’t understand them, and they don’t understand us. Some even harbor resentment, which we also don’t understand.

In a heartfelt program on May 3, Bentley Service-Learning Director Franklyn Salimbene named six student recipients of the 2011 Sandy M. and Harry G. Adamian Community Service Awards. The Adamian Award honors the memories of Sandy Adamian and her son Harry, who were committed during their lives to community service programs in Watertown, Belmont, and surrounding communities. The recipients, chosen for their outstanding commitment and dedication to service in 2011, received a plaque and a $500 citation.
