Global Values get a Boost from Grant Thornton

A gift of $50,000 from Grant Thornton LLP will extend partnerships between Bentley University and nongovernmental organizations in Ghana such as the Mmofra Trom Center. The leading audit, tax and advisory firm, which has offices in 100 countries, is also collaborating with the campus chapter of Beta Alpha Psi to help train financial officers of student organizations.

Conversation Partners Program Helps Bridge Gaps

Do you want fries with that? Some of the smallest things can pose the greatest challenge for international graduate students who are adjusting to life in the United States. So says Shanghai native Shaoqing (Alvin) Yao, a student in the Master of Science in Finance program.

“I had a lot of trouble ordering in restaurants . . . the many choices of sauces and what to add, like lettuce, tomatoes and pickles,” he says. The variety of offerings could make even a trip to the supermarket or pharmacy seen daunting.

A student-led fund drive has brought new color to the lives of people in remote villages of Africa. The second annual Bentley Goes Red for Africa campaign raised $4,700 to benefit the Mmofra Trom Center and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

In Morocco, Building Dreams

Dominique Miles ’11 arrived on campus packing ambitions to be a pioneer of change. “I was always told that I could be anything I wanted to be,” she recalls of growing up in Atlanta, Ga. “Nothing was impossible.”

That message of empowerment is one that Miles aims to deliver to women elsewhere in the world. She already has a well-stamped passport, thanks to global programs at Bentley.

Her journey started with a short-term study abroad program in the North African country of Morocco.

Lessons Learned from Adversity

Simon Moore wants students to experience at least one crisis before leaving Bentley. It can be a tough lesson. But the associate professor of Experience Design is preparing students for the tough situations that are inevitable in professional life.

“Every structure -- social, natural, corporate and political -- contains contradictions that are potentially the seeds of disaster,” Moore notes. “Crises are a vivid experience, and also a vivid learning experience.”
