New Minor on Deck

A new Bentley minor — Sports Business Management — takes the field this coming fall. The program comprises four courses already in place within different academic departments. Students will pursue three sports-related business courses (options include Sports Marketing and Economics of Sports) and one related arts and sciences course, such as Sports Psychology or Physics of Sport. CNNMoney.com. Toni Wolfman, executive in residence at the Bentley Women’s Leadership Institute, is highlighted for research on women in positions of power; the story is “Gender Diversity on U.S. Boards Coming Anytime Soon?” (January 25, 2011).

WBZ-TV Boston. Bentley freshman Mark Bao is featured on the station’s news program for creating and selling a website, threewords.me,  that went viral overnight (January 24, 2011).

Bully Pulpit

Sarah Benson ’11 grew up in Middletown, R.I., with a disabled family member who was a constant target for taunts and worse. It broke her heart, she says, and hurt her entire family. Today, Benson is on the front lines of an anti-bullying movement at Bentley that is helping to educate the local community.

“I’m passionate about this,” says Benson, pictured in the foreground, above. “We need to inform people and talk about how damaging bullying can be.”

Math and Sports a Winning Matchup

As a kid, Rick Cleary learned early on that a career as a professional athlete wasn’t going to add up. Luckily, he had a pretty good backup plan.

“I’ve always loved both math and sports,” he says. “I wasn’t too good at sports. I was good at math.”

Cleary would eventually land on his high school cross country team – and parlay endless hours with The Sporting News into a life in statistics. With a PhD in the subject from Cornell University, he joined Bentley’s Mathematical Sciences faculty in 2001.

“The heart and soul of service–learning.” That’s how scores of colleagues describe Franklyn Salimbene, director of the Bentley Service–Learning Center (BSLC). Under his leadership, the center has notched many achievements and earned recognition by organizations such as U.S. News & World Report, the Princeton Review and the Carnegie Foundation.

Fiscal 2010 in Review

A Slam Dunk in Marketing

“Can you find 10 people to try on a pair of sneakers?” The question from Converse was a gimme for Ian Cross, who directs Bentley’s Center for Marketing Technology (CMT) and teaches in the Marketing Department.

 

His response -- “How about 4,000 Bentley students?” – kicked up more than a little interest at the athletic footwear company. Before long, Converse had paired with the CMT to conduct fit and wear trials with Bentley students, a target demographic for the company’s casual wear.
