BLIZZARD OF 1978

The Blizzard of ’78 began on a seemingly normal wintry day on Monday February 6, 1978.  Many people went to work and school, thinking that snow was not coming. There had already been a storm on January 20th leaving two feet of snow on the sides of the road.

Bentley resident students were stuck, as cars were snowed in, and roads were shut down except for required workers.  Students found ways to entertain themselves.

Students found themselves bound on campus for a week. The cafeteria was open to all students, but many found it necessary to get supplies from town. Students had to walk to Stop and Shop and other stores in town. Many students took the carts, and later stores requested them back.

 

 

 

Roof Diving

Students jumped from windows and roofs into the large snow banks. Unfortunately, a significant number of people injured themselves in this pursuit.

Skiing

Skiing down the hill of Bentley became a popular activity.

 

 

Sledding

Students would steal trays to sled on them. Over 100 trays were taken by students for this purpose.

Snow Sculpture

Bentley hosted a snow sculpture competition. The competition was judged by President Adamian. Sculptures included that of a sports car, Snoopy, a falcon and more.

Clearing Out

Clearing out was a difficult process.  Students worked hard to clear off their cars, but could not move them far as roads were closed to most cars. The school hired students to do some of the shoveling.

Classes resumed on Monday February 13.
