Service-Learning and Civic Engagement

Development Grant

The Bentley Service-Learning Center (BSLC) is pleased to announce service-learning embedded course development grants for faculty. The program seeks to encourage and assist faculty in developing service-learning projects that are embedded within course curricula. All faculty are eligible to apply.

Service-learning is designed to promote students’ learning and civic engagement through a combination of academic study, meaningful community service, and reflective thinking.

An embedded service-learning course project is one that is assigned to all students by the instructor as a required component of a course in the same way that a research paper might be. The number of hours students commit to embedded projects can vary at the discretion of the instructor in consultation with BSLC and the community partner.

Per semester, three grants of $750 each are available. To apply for the grant, please email GA_Service-Learning@bentley.edu.

In reviewing applications, consideration will be given to:

  • the pedagogical value of the proposed project to the course
  • the needs of BSLC community partners
  • a fair distribution of grants amongst the disciplines, and
  • the overall contribution of the project to the service-learning program.
  • Other factors raised within the individual applications will also be considered.

Faculty who receive a grant must:

  • attend a BSLC Service-Learning Faculty Workshop either during the year of the application or during the subsequent year;
  • follow service-learning course guidelines (see attached) in the development and implementation of the embedded project.

As with all faculty who undertake service-learning pedagogy, BSLC will assist those faculty who receive a development grant by helping to refine the project, find an appropriate community partner, and provide logistical support.
