On September 5, 2026, the YouTuber Elroddd posted the video “I Killed A Business Model,” which revealed his new website Destockd — a public domain archive video website. Despite Elroddd having fewer than 30,000 subscribers, the video has been viewed over 3.8 million times with over 117,000 likes as of this writing. “The response to the video has been unbelievable,” said Elroddd in a personal interview.

As we begin 2026, not only can we celebrate the New Year, but we can also celebrate a slew of artistic works that have become free for everyone to use. At the beginning of the calendar year, copyright expires for certain works, and they enter the public domain (PD). Works in the PD are not protected by copyright and are freely available for public use.

On January 1st, 2024, most works that were published in 1928 have now entered the public domain. When a creative work like a book, film, or song are developed, they naturally are protected by copyright law. This generally means that no one can reproduce or take ownership of the work without the permission of the owner.
