The phenomenon of “fake news” is nothing new. For centuries, consumers of information have encountered and engaged with sources that present stories that play to our own prejudices and biases, manipulating facts to serve specific agendas.
Happy New Year! If one of your resolutions is to read more in 2018, we have just the thing you get you started...our 9th annual Best Books display! This year we have combed through 20 year-end best books lists* to bring you over 130 of the top titles published last year. The display includes fiction and nonfiction, print and audio.
Are you curious about the "world" of resources that the Library offers? Visit the Library lobby all week to see a pop-up display of books and movies from across the globe! We'll also provide search tips on how to discover new favorite titles by searching for diverse writers and filmmakers. Do you already have a favorite book or movie from a diverse voice or place that's not in our collection? Let us know by placing a title into our suggestion box, and we'll consider adding it.

According to the American Library Association website, "A [book] challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. As such, they are a threat to freedom of speech and choice."
