Why should I apply for a grant from a private foundation?
Private foundations are charitable trusts that make grants for scientific, educational, cultural, religious or other purposes. The world of private foundations is vast and varies—just like faculty research and teaching success.
Private foundations range in scale from the internationally known (the Ford Foundation) to regional (the Yawkey Foundation) to local (the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation). Their interests and priorities support a wealth of objectives, including higher education and faculty needs. Some academic and professional societies even have fellowship programs that support faculty research (the American Council of Learned Societies).
How should I apply?
- First, please read the steps to applying.
- Please contact the Office of Foundation Relations to set up an appointment:

If possible, we will also arrange for you to meet with the directors of Sponsored Programs and Corporate Relations at the same time; your project may have possibilities in all three areas.
We can also serve as your liaison to University Advancement (UA)—the university’s fundraising division. UA works with alumni, parents, students and friends of Bentley to raise financial support. Individuals may be interested in supporting academic priorities; a worthwhile option if you are considering external support.
Why should I partner with Foundation Relations?
While we encourage grant-seeking by members of the Bentley community, it is in Bentley’s best interest to work in a coordinated, strategic manner. We ask you to please collaborate with our office or other units of UA when seeking external support.
